vegas = horrible quality video

Hey all,

Everytime I render movie as a mpeg2 or avi file, it comes out too dark and yellow and it looks nothing like the way it looks while I'm editing. but when I render it as a .mov file it comes out looking good. I've tried messing with the settings but I get the same results. And this is frustrating because I can't even print to tape without rendering it as an avi file and I can't make a dvd without rendering it as an mpg2 file. Anyone have this problem with vegas? Would editing my film on another editing program like final cut pro produce better results?

Thank You,

This is not a problem you should having at all. What you see in your preview screen (assuming you don't have your effects disabled) should be what you get in your AVI or MPEG.

Have you calibrated your monitor?

Do you color-correct using an external monitor? Is that monitor calibrated?

the problem is that it also looks bad when I print to tape and view it on the tv, so it might not just be the monitor

Well, by "external monitor," I meant a TV or something you might be previewing out on.

But if your monitor isn't calibrated properly, you will end up being surprised by the result when you view it on a TV.

Also, you can't go by the computer monitor for what it will look like on a TV even if your computer monitor is calibrated -- which is why you should preview out to a TV or (better yet) a studio monitor, making sure it's properly calibrated.

A computer monitor is capable of displaying FAR more resolution than a TV, both in terms of detail and in color. Things which look great on a computer monitor might look horrible on a TV. It's up to you to make sure that you're color-correcting based on your output format, which for DVD or print to tape would be a TV.

Do the AVI or MPEG-2 files look different when played on your computer than they do when on the TV?

It looks the same on my tv as it does on my monitor. And only the mpeg and avi videos look bad - When I render it as a quicktime movie it looks great - almost identical to the video in vegas.

Are you using the default DVD templates under MPEG-2, or are you changing anything?

Same for AVI -- are you using the default DV templates, or are you changing anything?

The first time I rendered was through default templates, then I tried changing the settings for both avi and mpeg2 - but had no luck.

The default templates should give you exactly what you see in your preview. There must be something else going on here.

Can you post a screen shot of your project? Then, bring your problem AVI or MPEG into Vegas (new project if you like), make a screen shot of that, and post it, too? You make a screen shot using the little floppy disc icon over the preview window, and you can upload the images here at the site by using the red "up arrow" button when you Go Advanced.

ok I'll put that up soon , 1 last question- is there way I can record the footage from vegas straight into the dvx without having to render to avi first?

No. Before it can print to tape, it has to render any effects, etc.. The AVI is only a wrapper; it's the DV codec that's used, because only DV can be recorded to the DVX.
