Relax, Bricey! The DVX is an EXCELLENT camera. Yes, I have my big new DSR450, but I'm constantly amazed at how good my trusty old DVX looks!
I gotta second that. The resolution jump to the HVX is minor, especially with the new crop of cameras coming out that will dwarf it, and it's quite a bit less sensitive than the DVX too. I won't say anything about the noise. :-P

Of course, the big advantage that the HVX has is the tapeless workflow - and I wouldn't give that up (in any camera) for the world. So they definitely both have their good points. But don't feel badly about your DVX. I still miss mine on a regular basis... at least it went to a good home! :)

Ramjet...I think I did. They told me they had two...one was a B-Stock. I went for the new one. I went out and got some shots of my puppy running around in the yard, getting stung by bees. Now I have to figure out how to play it back and get it into FCP...this P2 stuff is a whole new world!

Stick the P2 card in your computer.
Open Final Cut Pro.
Import .... Panasonic P2
It saves the files as .mov's in your capture scratch folder
Drag P2 card to trash
Eject P2 card
enjoy

As much as I've researched the whole process...JDS, your post has helped me more than anything else. Love the new avatar.

Not a recommended workflow on a Mac though. Importing directly from the card has been known to cause glitched frames. Apple recommends that you do a "disk image" of the card to your hard disk first, and then import the files from there.

I didn't know that, but I just didn't have the space.
After a while I was like - why am I copying all of these huge files TWICE, once a .mov's and once as the MXL or whatever they are ... my current short would require 500 gigs that way.

I guess you can delete the MXL files when you are done. But really you should have a dedicated hard drive to copy the MXL files to, or The P2 disk image rather, anyway which would be like still having a mini DV tape of the footage once you've capture it.

Then you still select Import Panasonic P2 from the FCP menu and just do it from the copy you made on whatever hardrive.

So ...
Stick the P2 card in your computer.
Copy P2 Card as disk image (hopefully to dedicated harddrive where you will save it)
Drag P2 card to trash
Eject P2 card
Open Final Cut Pro.
Import .... Panasonic P2 from the copy
It saves the files as .mov's in your capture scratch folder
enjoy

is definitely most prudent, but like I said I didn't know about the glitched frame thing and I have never noticed such a phenomenon importing 22 out of 24 p2 cards directly into FCP for my current project (knock on silicon).

Makes sense to do it that way...then you have a back up until you know that your footage is all good.

Once I drop my P2 cards into my P2Store, shouldn't the P2Store show up as an external disc in Mac OS? I don't see anything until I insert a P2 card, then I only get the contents of that card, and not the Store's HDD.

Well, my money should be here by saturday :) woo hoo. Then I can start ordering equipment. Gonna have to wait on my spec-comm purchases though, grrr.

Jason

Glad I could be part of your problem there, Jason. BTW, you know if you send them a Bank check, they'll knock another 2% off? Plus a free 5400 mah?

Yeppppp. I am definitely sending the certified check. Saving a chunck of change that way with as much stuff as I am buying from there :)

Thanks,
Jason

I know the DVX is still excellent. But I love these reminders.
