correct settings for editing 24p(adv) footage shot in squeeze mode on the 100b

I shot my film on the panasonic dvx100b. We used squeeze mode (for anamorphic) and 24p advanced. I am editing on a new intel mac with ample memory and the recent version of final cut.

We are currently test capturing clips and having problems. Here is what I am doing:

1. Set the sequence settings to "dvntsc48-24" and "anamorphic." Since this isn`t one of the settings that comes with the program, I make my own using the duplicate feature to add anamorphic to the preset settings for dvntsc48-24. (I`ve also tried using 23.98, but it doesn`t seem to make a difference with the issues we are having.)

2. Set the log and capture settings to "advanced pull down removal" adding anamorphic when I customize the setting.

3. I then capture test clips. I move them to the timeline and they appear with red lines (need rendering). That seems wrong...there must be a problem somewhere.

Also, I am running a dv signal out to my camera and then via rgb to my pro ntsc monitor which has as 16:9 button. On that screen they appear to have been doubly unsqueezed, so I unpush the 16:9 button and they seem normal. Is that right?

Thanks so much for considering these questions. We are based in Panama without much support nearby.

You want to capture the footage at 29.97NTSC with the anamorphic checked and set it to advanced pull down removal. This will remove all the extra pulldown frames and give you 23.98fps footage that can be edited on a 23.98fps timeline, without rendering, and then output to a 24p DVD or a clean film transfer.

Thanks -- its strange but I am doing that and it still tells me I have to render. Everything is set right -- the footage gets captured as anamorphic, advance pull-down removal. The timeline specs are for anamorphic 23.98...what could I be doing wrong?

That is weird. These are the setting I use for the same type of material you are working with.

Capture
Capture.tiff

Timeline
Timeline.tiff

This is a very helpful thread. However, I need some advice on how best to capture some squeeze footage shot on my DVX100B in 24P (NOT advanced). So far, any settings I use in final cut end up with horizontally interlaced blocks/blotches at times, definitely sub-par quality for exporting to .flv for my website. Do I need a pulldown removal when not shooting in advanced?

Here are the settings I used when shooting:

Knee: Auto
Matrix:*Cine-Like
Progressive: 24P
Syncro Scan: 1/60.0
Aspect*Conv.: Squeeze
Color Bar: Off
Setup: 0%

Thanks for any ideas!

Ditto--we have the same issue: How to capture squeeze in 24p (NOT advanced). What should be the sequence and capture settings? We need to integrate it into footage we shot in 24PA (and successfully captured using the Advanced Pulldown setting).

Make sure both your footage and your timeline are checked "anamorphic." If your clips are and your timeline's not you'll have to render every clip that hits the timeline. They just have to match. If you scroll over in your browser there's a little checkmark, you can set it for both the sequences and master clips there.

Hi,

This is my first post here and I am also new to both FCP (version 6) and DVX100 so please be kind.

I have some footage that was shot in 24p (NOT advanced) SQUEEZE too and I need a clarification.

1 a. I assume that I don't need to do a pull down. In that case, do I still need to capture my footage at 29.97 (pulldown) as mentioned above or can I use one of the 24p settings?

1 b. If I don't need to do pull down, should I still duplicate and create a new setting that is DV NTSC 24p anamorphic or can I use an existing setup? Which one?

2. I don't see a check mark in the browser window for anamorphic. I assume that I need to do this before capturing, so am I missing something?

3. I am doing this without an external monitor so if I have these settings right, do the various windows of FCP correctly display the aspect ratio (so that if I have done something wrong I'd know right away) or will they be unsqueezed?

Thank you.
