Question on exporting HVX footage

Hey guys,

I have been having a little trouble with this, and was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I've been attempting to export some screen grabs from my hvx footage, as well as compressing a trailer for my film. Every time I export out of FCP, whether I use compressor or quicktime conversion, it always screws up the aspect ration of my 16:9 HD footage. Everything was shot 720p 24pn on the hvx, I have tried every different option, resizing, etc. to get this to work. Is there something simple I might be overlooking? Any help is much appreciated.

In what way does it screw up the aspect ratio? How does it look? 4:3? Is the image squeezed? I have been exporting 720p footage to 16x9 DVD and it's been working without a hitch. What option are you choosing through compressor?

The aspect ratio is 16:9 inside final cut, but whenever i export it makes it 4:3. I have tried clicking on the maintain aspect ratio control in both final cut, and compressor, but it doesn't do anything. Even my still frames come out 4:3 and it looks awful. This only happens when I try to compress a movie. When i just export my timeline as a DVC Pro HD quicktime file, that works fine. Problem is I'd like to compress some clips for the web, and have them looking nice.

If I export it with the compressor I can choose between 16:9 or 4:3, then it should be fine... Is there something wrong with the sequence setting?

I've found that FCP does, in fact, cut the edges of your stills off and gives you a 4:3 still when you export. Not sure why it does this. Compressor is a lot of wasted time to export a still, IMHO. I am looking into it, as I have to make a bunch of stills from a 720p24 DVCPRO-HD project. Seems to be something Apple forgot about here.

To clarify, I make a still in FCP. I export it as a still in QT Conversion. I select TIFF (doen't matter, they all act the same) and export. What you get is a normal looking still image, but with the edges cut off to a 4:3 aspect ratio, no squeezing or anything.

Great looking stills, just not the proper aspect ratio.

Haven't had probs doing that w/ Varicam stuff

Are you guys only finding this with the HVX? I've been making a bunch of stills off our Varicam footage and haven't had any problem (same codec as HVX). The only catch is that it exports it using DVCPro HD pixel ratio, which isn't the same as say a normal still one (basically it exports "oval" pixels but what you want as a still are square ones). So I just turn off any kind of "constrain proportion" setting and adjust my width and then it looks great. I haven't tried doing so with HVX footage though, so not sure if there's some other kind of quirk going on with specially that stuff.
