P2 capacity and the question of Maths

A simple question Maths and Storage capacities.

From what I'm reading from P2 catalogue is the following:

4GB P2 card can store 16 mins of DVCPRO/DV or 8mins of DVCPRO50 (Data Transpher speed 640Mbps...Max)

Does that mean that this 4GB card can store 4 minutes of DVCPRO100??? or is it more? or is it less?

(Is DVCPRO100 same as DVCPRO-HD?)

and if this is the highest spec that HVX can record (assuming 720p/24pN or 1080)... 1GB/minute
something must be wrong when CinePorter, for instance, claims that we can record 400mins onto their 160GB
... or when some in this forum claim that when a 128GB P2 card comes out it will be able to hold 10 hours of HD 720/24pN
and yet I've see from some Final Cut Pro screen grabs that it is only 14MB/sec.
14MB/sec x 60 seconds = 840MB/minute ...are my calculations right???
and if so, then 14Mb per second divided into 24 frames gives us 580kB per frame... so where is the High Definition in here??? My digital camera shoots better than this???

something is not right in terms of Maths that people do, or maybe its just marketing, but we need to get to the bottom of this...

Can someone tell me what is what?
- How many minute of optimal HD recording can I fit into a 4GB card?
- and how does that work out in terms of frames, resolutions and pixels?

Does PAL or NTSC effect any of these?

Presario20... if you're reading this, can you please tell us what were your settings during he shoot and how much of that amazing footage from "ILLEGAL" were you able to fit into these 4GB cards?

cheers

You are looking extremely deep into the math there. Simple rule for the 4gb card.

720pN @ 24 Frames Per Second = 10 minutes
1080i/p = 4 minutes

but is that HD???

also: I thought HVX does not do 1080p (progressive) for 24fps in HD

another question, another BUT:
if DVCPRO 50 is 50Mb/s, then DVCPRO-HD must be 100mb/s... right? 4mb per frame.
if so, then it should be 100mb x 60 seconds = 6GB/minute
am I missing something out?? Is 720/24pN a real HD?

Yes that's HD.

The numbers have been published for a long, long time.

DV = 25mbps. DV50 = 50mbps. DV100 = 100mbps.

DV = 4 minutes per gig. DV50 = 2 minutes per gig. DV100 = 1 minute per gig.

720p uses up to 60fps at 100mbps. If you don't use all those frames you can save space on the card. 720/60p = 100mbps. 720/30p = 1/2 as many frames, so half as much bandwidth: 50mbps. 720/24pN = 40mbps, or 2.5 minutes per gig.

Barry Green and Cynic821.
Thank you very much for clarifying this for me.
So basically, if I have a 4gb card, and I want to shoot in DVCPRO-HD with 720p/24pN (which I believe is the setting for that nice "cinematic" look) then I can expect to have 10 minutes of footage. It's like having a 1000ft. film-magazine!!! This P2 thingie is not as bad as I thought.
(I still have to figure out how to get 2-3hours of footage from a day's shoot without having to carry my my Toshiba laptop, because then, apparently there is a formating issue between XP and MacOs and I will not be able to edit in FCP)
But thanks for clarifying this bit.
