...Yet another T-Shirt worthy sentiment there, Hudson!

Oy Vey! What drama!

Precious few things in life mean more to me than films do (and have). Bottom line is that truly great motion pictures appeal to the heart first and foremost, not so much to the intellect...

if one wants to be enlightened, there is a wealth of philosophical sources in this wonderful world just waiting to be investigated. There are next to no such places, however, where one can take a full-fledged emotional journey...and the cinema just so happens to be one of those extremely rare places.

So when do we get our shirts? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Seriously, the best thing about these lists, is that you get to know people. You learn to see how they think by what they like, particularly when their picks are debated. I certainly don't agree with all of everyones picks BUT when I see picks that I do agree with and then others by that same person that I haven't seen, it piques my interest. I gives me an opportunity to see movies that I might otherwise not have seen.

It's absolutely ludicrous to say that a list has no validity because it's not composed after seeing EVERY movie made that year. No one is saying these lists are comprehensive. It's just a group of friends sharing their insights into movies from different years. How better to learn than to share.

Callaghan is providing a service that is much appreciated by many. If someone DOESN'T appreciate it for what it is, they're in the wrong thread.

By posting their list, a person is saying, "this is who I am, by what I like." I've posted a couple (AT LEAST) movie choices that have raised eyebrows, but I'm not about to apologize for them. It's who I am.

No one's asking for everyone to agree with them on everything but there ARE times with certain movies that it is just incomprehensible that they don't have universal appeal. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

a great point, which prompted the realization that the films I cherish the most, above all others, are the ones that marry that emotional journey to an intellectual or philosophical journey. i don't think they need to be mutually exclusive and for me its more rewarding when they work in harmony.

come to think of it, my avatar is from a film that falls in this category for me. Lilja 4-ever follows the journey of a russian teenage girl sold into sex slavery in sweden. her story is compelling and emotionally taxing and would make a great film on its own. but the filmmaker (Lukas Moodysson) also provokes us with bigger political ideas about how affluent countries prey on the people of economically depressed nations. and to top it off, the film also rewards us with a spiritual encounter that leaves me emotionally devistated, yet optimistic.

Hmmmm. A walk down memory lane. What a night that was...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

And no, I didn't see much love for Body Double in the list from 1984. I've always liked it and felt it was underrated.
