Nintendo Wii - $250, November 19

I've always been a Playstation fan (Well, Sega first... ok, actually Atari first). But with the new controller and the way it's used to play sports games, I may have to get this for the office so I can screw around all day and never do any work.

Today Microsoft announced the Japanese price for its upcoming Xbox 360 HD-DVD player...it's only $177. As an Xbox 360 owner, I'm going to pick one of these up, and rent the HD movies from Netflix. It's a cheap path to HD-DVD.

360 has DVD...the add-on unit will be HD-DVD. They are positioning the 360 as a clear alternative to Sony & Blu-Ray.

Microsoft also annouced they're upgrading the 360's resolution output to 1080p via a firmware upgrade. This will apply to all 360s, not just new ones.

japanese one is about $177. The US version is an even $200.

It's nice if you already bought a 360, but other wise it's back to $600... what the PS3 costs. Why is a PS3 with blu ray playback not worth $600 but a 360 with HDDVD playback is?

I'll watch dvd's another year and wait until either HD-DVD player are $100-200 or Apple's iTV supports HD movies (which I imagine it will as soon as they can impliment it).

Im a Playstation guy but the ps3 looks to be almost impossible to get for a while after its released and it cost a ton. i may look into this wii thing.

Because with the 360 it's an option. I personally don't think either high def disc format is here to stay, so at least with the 360 I don't have to pay for it.

And for what it's worth, I think you're right on about the iTV. :)

The last game console I bought was the Super NES. I was given a Xbox and several games but that thing just sits around collecting dust. It's not that I don't like video games but the console style of constant rabid button mashing started being more painful and boring then fun.

As much as I have less interest in Nintendo"Mario" type games compared to Xbox and Sony games, I am actually considering buying the Wii just because of the new controller. That actually looks like fun. Improved graphics are great but something ACTUALLY innovative and different is the only thing that will have me reaching for my wallet.

Cheers
