AMD's native quad core vs. Intel's 2xdual core...

Well about 6 months after intel releases its version of quad core processing, which is just two dual-core processors stuck togethor, AMD will be releasing (right now estimated at first half of 07) its native quad-core design. Designed to be quad-core from the get-go, I must admit, it looks quite interesting. It should use a good deal less power than Intel's quad-core design, and looks like it has the potential to retake the thrown once again from intel. What do you think? It looks like they are doing a 3 phase roll-out. the first of which will be compatible with amd's new dual opteron socket that uses the ddr2. The others will have other goodies such as hypertransport 3.0. Apparently the new architecture will be quite scalable as well, and they may have plans to introduce a dual-core version as well. It has been dubbed the K8L. Here is a wiki link with some decent links from it as well.

Could be an exciting year in the processor battle.

What's got me totally excited about this is that the chips perform linear. No roll off in computing power after adding the third or fourth cpu.

That's the thing though, the core 2 "quadro" is essentially just two core 2 duo chips glued togethor. The amd k3l is designed from the ground up to be a "native" quad-core processor. For example, the first dual core chip offerings from intel sucked, in my opinion, in comparison to the dual core that was being offered by amd. Then, along came the core2 duo. Which was designed as a dual core processor and to use less power, etc. And it rocks.
I expect the first quadro's will scream in comparison, as a matter of fact the first benchmarks on tom's hardware for them, indicate just that. However, 6 months later their is a "next generation" quad-core offering coming from amd.
The early amd quad core chips will be compatible with the socket am2 that is already out. The intel quadro will be compatible with the socket 765 and 775 that is already out, as well. The second and third revisions of the amd k8l, however will use a socket "F". Anyways, it should b einteresting.

what is the processing power of a dual core 2ghz chip compared to like a 3 ghz standard chip? Particularly in nonthreaded applications?

I don't have the benchmarks off hand, but a core 2 duo should pretty well knock the socks off of a 3ghz single core, and comsume less power while doing it. Even the "woodcrest" xeons the 51xx series, knocked the socks off of faster 50xx series xeons. Both are dual core.

well intel is coming out with native quads 2nd qtr 2007 called tigerton

That I wasn't aware of. So it looks like both companies will have native quad cores coming out right abou the same time. Should be interesting....
