Lenmar Lithium Battery Ruptures

Today I was recharging all my Lithium batteries for my HVX200 and to my horror I found one of my newly purchased lithium batteries ruptured. Luckily it wasn't connected to my camera. Who know what kind of damage it would have done to the camera if it was connected. I have uploaded photos of the damage for your viewing pleasure. Oh and the Battery is made by Lenmar, model number LIP540.

Has anyone else had this happen to one of their lithium batteries? It's not a Panasonic branded battery. It's made by Lenmar but is specifically made for the panasonic line of cameras. The guys at Professional Video and Tape, INC. told me that these batteries are just as good as Panasonic branded ones. Does anyone have a take on this, whether I should go back to buying only Panasonic branded ones or that this was just a one in a million dud battery that I ended up getting?

Now that would have busted ALL the tabs! :-)

I guess I'm sticking to Panasonic batteries. If one should ever fail like this, I'm much more likely to get the camera fixed than with a third-party battery.

buy the batteries from the DVXuser shop. I personally dont like any lenmar products. Ive gone through 3 battery chargers from them. All bought for me, not by me and i figured id use them. None of them charged my batteries more than half way if they even recognized the battery in the first place. I hate lenmar products and would probably never let a battery thats not Panny or DVXuser touch the HVX. :P Lucky though like you said that it wasnt in the HVX at the time!

Did this happen while being charged? What charger?
FYI, LI-Ion cells are inherently flammable, for this reason they all have internal safety circuits. The fire can be caused either by internal faults, or faulty charger. Even brand name packs have a history of heat damage, Sony had a well known recall a couple years back. Apple laptops had their share of trouble...

No. It was just sitting in my camera bag. I used it a couple days ago and it was working fine. And the only chargers I have for the batteries are the ones Panasonic provides with their HVX200 and DVX100.

Looks like I'll be returning the battery tomorrow and hopefully getting a full refund.

Could it be that something managed to short-circuit the battery while it was in the bag? The contacts are recessed but sometimes you just never know how things might end up lining up just by pure chance.

I usually keep my battery contacts covered with something just in case.

While i don't doubt that this could have happened without any intervention I just wanted to ask:-

-How long did you have the battery and how many charges would you estimate it has done
-Also was the battery in a bag with keys or metal objects etc.

I am just interested to know because I had a battery pack in my pocket once and it short circuited on my keys. I only realised when it felt like there was a fire in my pocket (Hmmmm I also remember smelling something burning - but was too busy shooting the breeze!)
The battery was ruined but I imagine if it continued without intervention it would have looked like it was related to your melted battery.

So - any confessions??????

:-)

David,
I got the battery from Pro Video and Tape. They told me that they had sent this battery out once for a rental (the day before) so I'm guessing it had a couple charges on it at most. I charged it once. About a week later it ruptures. I believe I might have used it once on my camera but my memory is a little hazy about that.
But I do remember that I had it in a plastic bag the whole time it wasn't in use and nothing else was in the bag.

so no confessions on this one.

But I took the battery back to Pro Video and got it exchanged for an Panasonic branded battery. No more Lenmar for me.

Hmm I just sent away for 2 Lenmar fast chargers.
Anyone els have problems with them. My buddy ahs one ( don't know if its a fast charger & it seems to work fine.
I will report back.
DVX user batts have been good to me.
3 of 4 mounted fine on my Marshall. One didn't
