What is the FS-100 Transfer Speeds???

Does anyone know how long it takes a full FS-100 100GB of video to transfer to a local hard drive through the IEEE 1394 protocol? They say faster than real-time...but what is that? Thanks in advance.

I'm just taking a guess here but to record you record at about 1 gig per minute. So I'm thinking the transfer rate would be faster than a gig a minute.

The transfer rate from FS-100 to a computer is about two times faster than real-time, but this performance can vary on a lot of different things. If you transfer from FS-100 to another FireWire hard drive via a computer and both FS-100 and the drive are on the same FireWire bus, it can be quite slow. For best results to an external drive, I would recommend FS-100 to a USB2 drive as they are on separate buses. Also, make sure that no other devices are connected to the FireWire bus.

Hope that helps.

Last week I had to transfer 85 gig to a RevA 17" Powerbook and an external La Cie HD midway through a shoot.

FS-100 into the FW400, and the La Cie into the FW800. As mentioned in the earlier post, they are on the same bus.

This transfer took two hours.
We had a nice lunch... lit the next set-up... checked audio..... loosened up the interviewees..... tweaked the lights..... recorded to a couple 4 gig P2 cards....
At last I was able to confirm the transfer, format the FS-100 and hook it back up to the cam, and we were off again.

Fortunately, I had warned the director, that as we were in HD vs. SD, we would have to do a footage dump after 90 minutes as opposed to getting all of the days interviews captured on one FS-100. FWIW, the same transfer to my G5 took half the time.

Makes shooting in DVCPro50 pretty attractive for lots of stuff eh? A few more gigs like this and I will spend the dough on a second FS-100, not everyone allows a two hour lunch ; )

Best,
Christopher

I can't give you exact numbers, but back when I first got my FS-100, I filled it up, transfered to my media drive (internal SATA on a Mac QuadCore), the numbers showed significantly faster than real time transfer.

But then there's also the time FCP takes to ingest the footage. But even with that figured in, I was still a good bit better than real time.
