The ME66 vs NTG-2 question...Economic Practicality

Hey, I'm as much a noo-b to filmmaking as it can get but I have been searching through these forums and learning a lot--really quickly. Well I want to get two mics, one for indoor shots and the other for outdoor shots. For indoor dialog I was going to buy a ME64 but for outdoor dialog I was going to get a rode ntg-2 (or 1) but I've read that the ntg-2/1 is comparable to the ME66 which uses the same power....thingy as the ME64 (k6) so would it make more sense to just get a ME64 and ME66 to do indoor and outdoor dialog, respectively. I would assume that that would same me a few much needed dollars. Or is the Rode mic just that much better than the Sennheiser

this question isn't answered anywhere. Some people on this site go with the ME66 others like the ntg but that's NOT the question. I know both a good mics for the DVX...I know they're both comparable. The question IS does it make sense to invest in 2 separate mics when I could basically get one and a half (lol)--because all you do is screw on and off the different capsules. I've heard people say that the rode sound is slightly richer, but is the compromise worth it to save some money. I hope I'm clearer because I'm really interested in your opinion.

both are **** - if you look for heap solution the ntg-1 is abetter choise for every da usage , cheaper and shorter

Michael Schoenfeld here,

I have 2 sets of Sennheiser ME66/K6 with the ME64 modules - both set-up include both capsules for sale.

I just bought the Schoeps CMIT -5 $1800 so I don't need these any longer, but they are essentially new.

If you're interested let me know via email.

Michael- I'm interested in one of your me66s, but whether I can afford your price is another matter. What are you looking to get out of them?

Hey Capt,

Michael Schoenfeld here,

B&H wants about $550 for ME66/K6 and ME64 - how does $400 for that sound?

As I said earlier - these have seen VERY little use (B&H would list I'd bet as 9+ on their used scale).

All the best,

Michael Schoenfeld

All the best,

Michael Schoenfeld

That is a good price, but still out of my reach at this time. Where were you 5 weeks ago when I still had the money? Doh!

Michaels deal is fair, do the mics come with mounting and wind protection or not though? Thats a key factor for these guys Im sure.

Personally, Id get an Oktava and a Rode if I only had a little bit of cash, but a modular approach is not TOO bad in this case, provided you arent expecting absolute miracles out of the ME series.

I like the ME66, I use it with the Audio technica 4073. Both live on the same mic mount and complement each other very well. The Ktek blimp thing is nice too..

The R0de NTG mics are excellent! I used to own ME66 and a 416(!). Now R0de is my prime short shotgun mic. The soud is sweeter with excellent side rejection. Vocals are warmer and more natural with the R0de. Using the 416 I got a mild midrange attenuatino and vocals would get buried in the mix. Ugh. The R0de sounds flatter and more accurate in the midrange, which is where the meat of voices are.
To its credit the 416 had more treble sparkle; my violin recordings sounded crisp and extended. The 416 also had slightly more 'reach' due to its length.
In terms of vocal recording quality, however, I would go with the R0de...

best,
-greg

woah! did someone just say an NTG was better than a 416?

BOING! Moderator!

Sorry man, thats just wrong. I know you are talking about music, and maybe thats your personal preference there, but in the arena of production sound recording, the NTG will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever (did I say EVER) beat a 416 in pretty much any area except price.

Im pretty sure a few people will agree with me on this. Say aye.
