Coppola's Youth Without Youth

I remember an article. I think it was in Wired. Where they were talking about how there are two different types of geniuses. There are those that peak early like in their 20s or 30s and then never reach that level again, although they may still do good work.

And then there's the other type that start out slow and peak much later in life.

I think Coppola is the former.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I just rented this DVD (and couldn't find another thread about this movie). Sorry to say I couldn't even finish it. Granted, I was kind of tired before I put it in, but I literally couldn't force myself to stay awake. Much of it is beautiful visually, but my interest ends there. I think Coppola just got way too wrapped up in his head and totally forgot about the audience.

Let's see... there is time travel (kind of), single characters with multiple identities, multiple languages spoken - rarely with subtitles (some "invented" languages to boot), scattered geography, and many transitions/flashbacks in time. Most of it with a melancholy score playing softly behind the "action." Sorry, but I could not keep up and the film never really gave me a reason to want to. Disappointing. I'll say this, though.. it was definitely not made for its commercial potential.

Anyone else seen this? My advice is to watch in the morning or with a strong pot of coffee brewed.
