FCP 5.1 HD capture problem
I edit the action sports TV show Xcorps. We have been shooting HD for over a year with the Sony HVR-Z1U. Just got a new Mac G5 dual 2ghz with 2.5 gigs ram running OS10.4.7,FCP5.1 and Quicktime 7.0.4 on a 23" Apple cinema display.
SD capture to HD timeline no problem but HD will not capture or even show images in log and capture window. Input setting set to HD via firewire. VTR prompt in Log &Capture window says connect is OK. Device control with Sony HVR-Z1U is OK-play, rewind ect. and audio comes through but no video image appears in L&C window and capture will not engage to set in/out points.
Time code reads in capture window ok. In out points show clip length too. *Final Cut crashes out when Log and Capture is closed. Capture of HD footage in IMOVIE HD is no problem so I take it my video card is good and the export from the Z1U is good.
What am I missing? Any insight greatly appreciated!

G5 Dual 2ghz - 2.5 gigs Ram Mac OS X (10.4.7) w. Quicktime 7.0.4
Capture is to Lacie Big Disc Extreme 500 gig external firewire drive connected to G5 via 800 Firewire cord.
Thanks,

It sounds like you are not changing the capture settings in FCP to match the output of the camera.

I second that...

Check your Z1U settings of iLink Downconvert setting. As it sounds like you're editing in the full resolution, you'll want this turned off.

Also, just cause FCP can be a little finicky at times, I'd try using one of the HDV easy setups (whichever corresponds to the settings you used to shoot with). That might also help align things for FCP's sake.

cheers.

Thanks CHEERS

Thanks CHEERS

Cheers-Thanks for your input. spent a couple days making sure the in and outs were matched with my Sony Z1U and FCP HD- and multiple other possibilities. After working 4 years with my G4 and FCP DV with no major hang-ups I expected some glitches with a new G5 and FCP HD. I'll try another HD camera model which will narrow things down.
Thanks again,
Stuart.

Have update version 5.1.1

Have update version 5.1.1

Thanks for catching that I wrote 5.1 though I did previously update to the new version along with the new Quicktime. I will be very happy to find a way to get the viewer window in HD log and capture to finally display an image! Why FCP crashes each time I close log and capture seems a clue!
I will keep at it but really must try another HD input device as well as a 400 to 800 firewire cord-camera to G5.
Thanks again.
Stuart.

When you say "HD", there are several flavors of it. Which specifically are you trying to work with? DVCPRO-HD, HDV, which?

Trash prefs (use FCP Rescue 5, or FCP Preferences Attic), run Disk Utility, run Disk Warrior. Sometimes that routine fixes things, sometimes it doesn't, but it won't hurt to try.

Be sure your camera and any external FW drives are not on the same buss. A 400 to 800 FW cord won't do you any good, the camera will still stream the same data at the same rate, which FW400 should handle very well. And a FW800 port will adjust it's transfer speed to the device attached. Remember that Firewire is actually a network transport protocol, not a set speed sort of connection. It can and will intelegently adjust itself as best as it can. A FW problem will not cause FCP to crash.

This has always been, in my experience, corrupt prefs files, or mismatch between camera settings and FCP capture settings.
