Dell 2407 WFP purchase help for G5 Owner

Alexa you must be loving all that "real estate" to work with. 17" to a 24" widescreen is a big jump. A big, happy, glorious, jump.

I've totally forgotten about the "old" days...

ya know, I'm already spoiled now. Monitor greed has struck. Next time, it is the 64' LCD TV. not sure what to do with my studio display, yet though.

desk top backgrounds look amazing!

Are you saying that you don't use the external monitor anymore? I'm really considering the Dell for my next workstation to replace two 15" monitors and it would be nice to not have to use the the external monitor as much, maybe just for color correction.

I look at the external monitor a lot less now. for CC and final checks, but you just can't get rid of it--even though it is now looking like an incredibly bulky dinosaur. wonder when these things will slim down.

Spend the extra 100 bucks and get the 23in Apple Display w/Student Discount for 900 bucks. Can't go wrong there. From what I read the Black Level on the 2407 isn't that great and most prefer the older 2405 over it so Idk if its a good choice. I say Apple.

Hey Alexa - do you have any pics of your editing setup that you can post? You cut with FCP on a MAC right? How do you monitor out to the external? Thru firewire or a break out box? I still haven't seen any footage played back on one of these larger LCDs - I saw the 23" Apple display today but they did have any video on the system to review off the monitor but the display didn't seem to large or overwhelming. It seemed about the same size as the two 15" monitors I use know but wihout the annoying split down the middle.

I cut with FCP and have my external monitor set up through firewire into a G5.

I 'm using a miniDV cam to do this all ( I know, not so pro, but it's been working great for a few years now at very low cost!!)

miniDV cam has s-video out. that goes to my sony pvm 14L5 ( I must really like y'll cause I actually dug up my receipt to check that...)
firewire to the g5

the set up instructs are in the fcp manual. unbeilievably, I calibrated it myself by reading some thing on video university dot com.

monitoring for color on these lcd things is a big no no.

someday maybe in early november I might give a video tour of my work area. but can't now!

Thanks Dude!, I was just curious... It is -almost- obvious that I will be needing some more horse power for such a display :dankk2: for taking the time to post replys (goes for all of you)

I'll come when I get my hands on mine... sometime around October :( .

Hey Alexa - Thanks for the link. Glancing over it I noticed that it has a picture in picture feature. Is this how you monitor the output of your video playback from FCP? Or do you just use the monitor within the program window?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, I never use the PIP and probably won't ever. I just use the Canvas in FCP to look at the video and glance over at my ext. monitor to make sure the color is cool.
