Mattebox & filters OR stick with CC and no box

So is using filters and a mattebox really worth it? Or can basically anything that you can get from filters be achieved with CC? I'm debating whether i should get a mattebox or not. Are they really even used for anything other than reducing flare and for using filters?

Mattebox is really something that improves the quality of your pictures, it should not be underestimated! We filmed a short documentary this summer with lots of sunshine from blue clear sky, and I was once again thankful that we had the mattebox attached to our camera. Besides eliminating flares, it also improves the contrast (especially with the extra side "flags" if possible), and protects the lens when moving to camera.
We also used a circular polariser, and occationally other filters too, Tiffen Pro-mist etc. I think it's best to make your pictures as good as possible in the camera. If I can improve the saturation and clarity of the pics with a polariser for example, I'll do it. Post or CC can only do so much, and it always costs more money to do afterwards. Also, when the NDs in your camera are not enough, and you have to cut even more light from the camera CCDs, you can put some extra NDs to you your mattebox and your saved.

Of course the price sets those certain name matteboxes to a luxury category for most people (like me). I just can't believe that a hard acrylic / plastic moulded box can cost 1500$!!! It's not hi-tech. Thank God there are cheaper alternatives.
The only really critical thing that I can think about a mattebox, is that it should have at least one rotating filter holder, and it shouldn't reflect straight light to the lens.
