color correcting one part of the image - but not all

I use premiere 1.5

I am going to have an actress out on the street in daylight. She will be wearing a predominantly pink outfit. My goal, in color correcting, is to make the look of the surroundings very drab (desaturate them) but really make her POP out - make her very colorful.

Is there a way to do this in Premiere?

I know I'm not supposed to do this but I'm on a deadline and the Premiere forum can take days before you get a response. So, here's my question...

I dont know reallt, but in my program, you dont color correct, you change the Highs and Lows of the saturation.

The mods arent going to be happy, BTW. Just forewarning you.
 
In Vegas, there's a Secondary Color Corrector where you could select the pink and choose to desaturate everything but that pink color.

Really. Hmph, was I wrong.

But if the shirt stands out on the original, just use a saturation threshold.
 
You could also, in Vegas, create a bezier mask around the "pink object" and then desaturate everything outside the mask. Though you'd have to keyframe the mask to follow any motion on the object (just showing there is usually more than one way to do things -- though Horse's idea is easier to implement :) )

It sure is- you just have to know how to do it.

I dont know about Premiere though... I was editing on it today, and I got so mad I almost kicked the PC, and actually broke the network cable. I dont like premiere.:evil:
 
This is better done is After Effect as it is fairly tedious to do in Premiere. What you're trying to do is basically a variation on the "one thing in color while everything else is b&w" technique. The basic way to do this is the same, but Premiere lacks the precision tool to do it well.

1. Put two layers of the same footage on top of each other.
2. In Premiere (if you must use it) go into the Keying folder and apply a 16 points garbage matte on the top layer.
3. Desaturate the bottom layer.
4. Select the top layer again and click on the Garbage Matte effect in the Effects Control menu. In the preview window you will see 16 corner points. By dragging these points directly in the preview window, you can change the shape of the matte. Adjust the points until it surrounds your actress. Now the bottom layer showed up and it's desaturated.
5. Keyframe the matte if you actress moves.

Try doing it and you'll see the problems right away. First, the matte is only 16 points, not enough to match the profile of your actress. You can try adding another 16 points or an 8 points but then you'll have to animate every single one of these points. This will also cause major slowdown.

Second, there is no way to feather (blur) the garbabge matte so you'll end up with a lot of ugly sharp corner. One thing I can suggest is to use a Color Pass filter to key out all other colors except for pink. This will help but depending on the scenery I think you won't be able to get rid of everything without clipping into your actress' clothes.

thanks for the replies. I don't want her face to be desaturated. So if I desaturate everything except for pink, her face will be colorless as well. Jade, don't have After Effects :( -- wouldn't know how to do it even if I did. What's the best way to do this using the color correcting tools? Creating 16 point mattes scares me a little, as I've never done it before. I'll give it a shot though.

Where is this"secondary" CC in Premiere? I think I understand this concept and if I do, I would like to know how to use it.
