On-camera Preview Monitor?

I've always used the viewfinder & LCD, but always yearned for a larger monitor to preview the footage... I've seen some professional setups that have a 7"+ monitor either on or beside the camera... I've recently seen these popping up on smaller indie cameras as well.

Can someone provide a little intro about these devices, costs, what you use, where to buy, etc? Thanks!

The threads probably empty because this has been covered so many times. search and you'll find all your answers.

I will answer this, most LCD displays are not sharp enough for critical focus, and they are not calibrated for exposure. They are mostly used for framing. There are some higher priced units that I hear are sharp enough for focus. Do a search and you'll find them.

Mang, I would certainly help more, but honestly, between me searching, then cutting and pasting the results, or you seraching, I choose you.

I do hope you find the answers you're looking for. I just cant do the work.

I think what you'll find is that most of the LCD's you'll find out there, including the ones on most of the portable DVD players, have a resolution of 480*234 thereabouts. The higher resolution ones have a resolution of 800*480 (WVGA) or similar. Note that even some of Marshall's models have the lower resolution. These translates to 112k pixels and 384k pixels.

Of course, the smaller the monitor, the higher the perceived resolution for any given resolution. The key to remember is that the DVX100B/102B EVF's resolution is 230k pixels and the LCD has 210k pixels.

So if you compare the two, you'll see that the lower resolution monitors, regardless of size, is going to offer significantly less acuity compared to the camera's own EVF and LCD. Only the WVGA monitors, which are considerably more expensive, are able to do a better job.

There are several models of such higher resolution WVGA monitors around but I've not seen them being reviewed here. Here are some links:-

Xenarc 700YV 7-inch LCD monitor (800x480 resolution - US$350)

Liliput 618GL-70TV/C/T or the HR702-NP/C/T (800x480 resolution)

They have several models that may fit the bill, as well as lower resolution ones.

Note that these accept composite input. The expensive Marshall model will accept DV input which means that you can output onscreen data to it I believe (at least on the DVX102B it can).

So, there you have it.

Ok here is a photo from my ebay screen, its not bad image quality. not anything close to the 500-1000$ screens but for $140 its a good image and gets the job done.

I also got a custom battery pack made that should power it for about 4-5 hours.
