Is the new OSX stable? I need some convincing.

Hello everyone,

Buying a new NLE editor and need faster hardware. Cannot decide on whether to go back to the Mac or stay the PC route. Avid on the PC, this would be my first choice. Not sure on which Avid product to buy...the problem is that I love FCP.

Is the new OSX stable? How stable is OSX using FCP? Please someone tell me if OSX is more stable now than in the past.

An upgraded MacPro or a new Intel DuoCore2 pc. Mac is about $4700 plus tax, pc around $3700 plus tax. Not including the NLE.

Looked at the new MacPro at the Apple store. I know this is Mac that is used a lot by the public, and the Mac froze and I had to reboot it by powering and powering off. The mouse worked, but the spinning icon would not go away when trying to open any program. Could not force quit anything. The only program open was the Finder. Who knows what was running on the Mac that day, perhaps it was the first freeze in weeks... but it brought back some bad memories.

I used to use OSX when it was Jaguar two years ago. And it, OSX, froze a lot on brand new hardware that included two new notebooks, two new desktops (forget the model numbers). When I started having common problems on four Macs, constant freezing, the solutions presented by Apple and many forums were to rebuild some type of file table via the command line before you booted into the gui and also in desperate times reinstall the operating system from scratch. Talk about time consuming. I sold all my Macs, I had enough. OSX ran fine for 4 months and that was it.

This latest experience at the Apple Store bought back some bad memories about OSX. I was a Mac person since the SE/30 and have always loved Mac. But the older versions of OSX cost me so much money in support costs.

I’ve had PCs that run GIS software, Photoshop, Quark,Word, Excel, Outlook, Autocad at the same time, and these pcs have not frozen in one year. Not once. And these pcs are running antivirus, antispyware, and other utilities always present in ram at the same time.

The Macs would freeze three times a week.

What do you think?

I love OSX i don't really have any probs with it. It is allot more satable then any windows machine I've ever run..

Now I'm not saying that it never frezzes up but not that often for me.

I have used FCP on Panther and Tiger without fail. Honestly, I am around 7-15 G5's a day all which are under high use in the FCP studio line, rarely, RARELY, do we have a crash.

I am still running a dual MDD G4 with 2 gigs of ram and panther at home and the thing has been incredible.

Mac is the way to go when it comes to heavy-processing graphics-intensive programs. I can count on one hand the number of times that my iBook has crashed in two years of continuous FCP editing. (And iBooks aren't even the top of the line!)

OSX has always been very stable. Not sure where you got the misinformation that OSX was not stable.

And when Lepeard and FCP-6 come out, it's gonna blow your socks off!

My computer has crashed two times since installing OSX. That's TWO times since 2002!! FCP has crashed maybe a handful of times since I started using it with version 1.0.

Either or...

Either or...

I think you can build yourself a strong box on either platform. Quite surprised by the amount of trouble you had with your Macs. Only time I ever had that much trouble with Macs was when the ones I was using had a bad set of ram in them. I think it was Kingston that had released a pair of similar chips, one line was happy with the Mac motherboards at the time, other other was not. We had the unhappy ones so the Macs froze up constantly on us until we made the hardware change.

As for the editing software, well you should go by what you're most comfortable with. What is going to make it easiest for you to produce the best results. They all have good points and bad points, none are perfect. Whichever you think you can troubleshoot best with and work most efficiently with is what I would chose.

In PC vs Mac, well one perk to the Apple lines now are that they are Intel boxes and you can run Windows on them. So get a Mac and you can run Final Cut Pro, Avid on either platform, Premiere Pro, Canopus Edius Broadcaster, and/or Sony Vegas. Of course you could run all but FCP on a PC as well so....
