Rycote Softie just don't cut it

I just bought a medium size for for my Rode NTG1. It is good protection for moderate wind. Sudden gust and strong wind will not offer protection.

Have you compared the ktek k-zep agaist the rycote system? Anyone here used both?

thanks!

Our good buddy Timapter is getting a free one from Ktek soon. I seem to remember he has a Rycote zep so I am sure he will give his complete impressions when he has both.

If you can't wait for his feedback, my guess is the Ktek won't be quite as effective in stopping the high winds but suitable for 97% of windy conditions (if we think of the Rycote as working in 98%). That's just a guess but as other have said, there is little doubt the Ktek will be a very high quality item. They tend to really think out their product design and work hard to please the customer. I can't imagine them making something sub-par.

I have a question similar to Craig's . . . aside from the fact that it's overkill for interiors, is there any reason NOT to save yourself the cost of a BBG and have your K-Zep do double duty with both shotgun and hyper mics?

I asked no question. You're likely referring to shawnmaddock.

I also don't use my K-Zep indoors. Its for my 416 outdoors.

Indoors I mostly use my MKH50 with simple foam.

B. a zeppelin takes up more space, making it more difficult to use with low ceilings and will keep the mic a bit further from subject.

The weight enters into it too and the fact that zeppelins are not 100% sonically transparent.

Most hypers do not even need a BBG. It is just a popular choice for the Oktava mic specifically because it is so sensitive to wind noise.

Cheers
