First Impressions of teh NEW DV MultiRiG

ive pics of the dvmultirig and it seems great but i was wondering if the tripodplate, wheels and the plate for the mic/batts all stay on at the same time wheather you shoot shoulder or on the tripod or do things have to come off when you go between shoulder and tripod?

The only thing I would have to do is figure where to carry my PAG C6 light battery on me, since I won't be in shoulder mode.

The MultiRig has a universal accessory plate. Would it be big enough? It could be used on side arm or on your back in shoulder mount mode. I guess it could also be used underneath the camera in 2 hand mode also.

This may be a stupid question but I was wondering if one could use the Varizoom with the DV Multi rig? Thanks

I just want to echo the fact that this is not, repeat NOT equivalent to merlin in any way shape or form. I'm sure it's great, but ask yourself, would you rather pay a bit more (OK, 2 x more), and have a real gimbled steadicam solution, or... yes, it takes time to learn, but I believe it is time well spent. Think about it - all the time you are shooting with this could be used to get really practiced with the merlin... and believe me, the results will show the difference. If you want to get closer to a pro look for your footage, then sorry, but it's no contest. Again, not a knock on the multi, just reality, like in "laws of physics". I have no stake in either solution, just pointing out facts. Make up your own mind. Shoot some footage with the multi and then with merlin, and compare.
Personally I never said that the Multi was equivalent to the Merlin, actually I think I said the later. However if someone wants professional looking steady, stable, and fairly smooth (fig rig), fatigue free style shots then this is for you.
I don't believe that it was never intended to be a steadycam type device that gives you super fluid shots. But rather one that does lots of things well.
As Danny said, kind of a Swiss Army type support.

Actually the accessory plate would still work with the huge PAG battery, as it wold just velcro to the back of the accessory plate (which comes velcroed and has bungee straps that would mount downward and under the back of the batter attaching to the plate)). But my reasoning for not using the PAG battery on the rig, is so I can do quick configuration changes for shooting style and sill use my PAG C6 light and battery.
I figure that I wold either strap the battery over my shoulder or most likely use the bet clip that screws onto the back of the battery. Then just leave enough slack so I can do overhead shooting if needed.

If you are talking about the Varizoom LANC remote, then yes you can.
I use the VZ Rock myself. I attach it to the left hand grip though, as that seems to be the only grip that always stays up front and never changes configuration.

how does this compare to a PAG orbitor or other stabilizer device?
The PAG Orbitor is essentially the same thing as the DVRig Pro, which BTW PAG use to sell before they released their version. So really any comparisonsto the DVRig Pro would be the same.
The PAG Orbitor DVRig Pro and such are great for all day shooting with the options for Dutch, PAN etc. style of shots, much like using a shoulder supported camera.
The Multi Rig is like a Swiss Army knife allowing you to shoot shoulder (DVRig style), steady handheld shots (Fig Rig style) or even pod supported (Fig rig ) style shots.

I love the support pod. For me, that is the coolest thing ever. It completely takes the weight of the camera away from your arms and back. I could shoot all day with this thing. It's almost like shooting on a tripod, yet with the ability to move while you're doing it. It's pretty slick.

So you can be steady and pan?
That would be great for recording sports where I turn in circles and trip over the tripod. Sounding pretty good to me so far. I'll take 2 dozen!

Yes, and with a little practice, I can see being able to be really steady when walking. Not Steadicam steady, but it'll be really nice. I would definitely use this for event and sports stuff. Hell, I'm gonna use this for my dramatic stuff quite a bit in place of a tripod if I need to speed things up.

I was testing configs last night with the Multi, and I must say, OMG I'm gonna love this thing. It's a lot easier to go from shoulder mode to Free Fly mode than I previously thought, and I can even go from shoulder mode to tripod mode fairly quickly and effortlessly. This of course is without my batter being mounted on the back.

The only slow down I experience is when I either attach or remove the support pod from the rig, as it has to screw in/out in order to be removed. Other than this nit pick, I am going to love this thing.
Can't wait to try it out tomorrow night in the field.

Awesome, post some goofy video for me. Something with you climbing a tree or chasing an old lady in the crosswalk!?

I might as well. My neighbors already think I'm nuts, why not add to it.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Multirig of course.

After all if your homeless and starving, at least you will be able to shoot some great video.

I made my own multi rig on Saturday morning and used it that night. I own a metal fabrication business so I was able to make it in about 3 hours. Excellent design and my shots were fun and smoother than handheld.
It was not a Merlin but the ability to swing the arms and handles every which way was great.
I would not recommend building your own because the price is right for the MultiRig and you probably don't have your own metal shop to build one.
Buy the MultiRig because it is freaking useful and priced very very good.
