Good tripod choice for Advanta-Jib Lite from Dykortech?

I'm going to be purchasing an Advanta-jib Lite and was wondering if anyone has any comments in regards to choosing a solid tripod for it. Dykortech recommends the Manfrotto 528X (load capacity = 66 lbs.) but I'd like to get some feedback before I shell out the money for it.

Are there any shortcomings worth noting for this tripod, or are there any other tripods in the ballpark of this price range ($620) that blow this model out of the water?

Another question... If I went with the 528X, would the Manfrotto 3067 dolly (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...e=290858_REG&addedTroughType=accessory_detail) be able to handle the weight of the tripod and jib without any problems? I looked on B&H and the manufacturers website but didn't see anything regarding weight/load capacity. The Dykortech website recommends a Manfrotto "314" dolly but I did a search for that and couldn't find anything at all to do with a dolly.

thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Just a correction on the dolly, the dolly is a Manfrotto 114, and it will handle the weight of the loaded jib, I use them myself.

Our new website is still in the works, but will have more info on that.

I did some research on tripods and found the Manfrotto to be the least expensive for the weight it'll hold. I met with the guy from Manfrotto at IBC in Amsterdam a few years back , I was surprised that the pod could handle the weight that it does.

I've had my big Advanta-Jibs on it weighing in at 350lbs plus. I don't recommend loading it up like that , just telling you from my experience with it. (film camera alone weighed around 60 lbs)

If you do find cheaper pods which can handle 100lbs plus, I'd like to hear about it also.

You may want to check out a commercial I shot for the jib, I haven't gotten around to compressing it better and posting it yet but a copy of it is at

Thanks

John

Thanks, John. From looking around it appears that the Manfrotto 114 and 3067 are the same dolly (named 114 outside the U.S. and 3067 for the U.S.).

I haven't been able to find any cheaper sticks that I'd feel comfortable buying. I've got a Bogen/Manfrotto 3236 tripod (I think it's called the 475b now?) that I've had for several years and have been happy with it. With that in mind, along with what you've stated, I'm sure the 528X will foot the bill just fine.

I'd like to place an order for one of your jibs this week. How do I arrange payment with a credit card?

BTW - Can you, or anyone else, please recommend a decent LCD monitor for use with the jib?

thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike

true on the Bogan/Manfrotto number designations

There are so many 12V LCD monitors out there, it all really depends on how much you want to spend, I think Walmart's even selling them now. The nice feature with monitors from companies like Nebtek and Varizoom is that they have their own rechargable batteries.

Because the Advanta-Jib Lite doesn't need any power itself you're likely to use it out in the field and it's always nice to find a monitor that uses the same batteries that your DV camera does.

Email me at john@dykortech.com with your contact info and I'll get in touch with you about ordering.

Thanks

John

John, that commercial is GREAT!!! Love it.
Had my eye on your jib for a while, and will also be ordering one hopefully by the end of year.

Thanks, John. I sent you an e-mail with my contact info.

I forgot to mention how much I liked your commercial. It was especially amusing because the character reminded me of some guy named "Jean Carlo" that I used to work with. LOL

I really look forward to receiving my Advanta-Jib Lite!

that looks like a sweeeet jib, but **** its expensive..

is there anything that can pull off those shots at a lesser price?

That's a VERY relative term; expensive.
The AdvantaJib can do things that many jibs can't do, that cost a lot more.
But you can get cheaper jibs/cranes, but once you add a good pan/tilt head on the end, you may find yourself spending a LOT more money than the AdvantaJib. Also, it uses no electricity.....no batteries...no chargers....

If you're looking for a "budget" crane, check out Kessler Crane; a great design for little money. Of course, it simply can't do all what the AdvantaJib can, but it's not so EXPENSIVE!

Mike - How do you like your new jib setup?

Mike or John - With the Manfrotto 114/3067 dolly attached to the tripod, is it possible to dolly the whole rig while doing the crane work, too? The wheels look like they might add some vibration.
