Using tv to monitor

Hi, can anyone please tell me how I can use an external monitor for doing my editing? I am new to Premiere Pro and have been doing my editing on the small monitor windows within the program but I assume that it is possible for me to get the output through to monitor my work on a normal tv set. I am editing music videos and need to sync lips with audio.

Thanks.

The easiest way to do it if you don't have dedicated hardware, is to run firewire out to your camera or deck, and RCA or S-vid from your cam to your tv. Then set Premiere to preview on DV hardware.

That'll work but there is going to bit about a 1/2 sec delay between your TV and your computer. The TV signal will be a bit behind but the audio and video will be in sync to what's on the timeline, just delayed. Make sense? You just have to turn down your computer speakers and look and listen to the TV or vis-versa...

Sirius,
Hmm... then it may depend on the equipment you use. I run it out though my little sony handicam all the time and don't have a noticeable delay. I usually set the audio to go out my PC speakers cause they sound better. If there was a 1/2 second delay going out the firewire, I would notice it unless I don't understand what you're saying

Sirius you are correct, there is a slight delay.

Like he said, turn down your PC speakers when you preview and there is no problem.

Thanks for your replies.

By the way, my graphics card has got a tv out, is that any use for what I am trying to achieve?

Probably not. It will not output only your monitor window from your NLE software. It will only output from the TV tuner or maybe your entire computer screen.
Another alternative would be something like the Matrox card but it's expensive.

My GeoForce 5600 card will output the Vegas NLE monitor window to a tv leaving the NLE on the LCD (the tv is set up as a second monitor in Windows XP Pro) but that is with Vegas - that is how I colour correct for tv.

Does Premier not do the same?

ogrus,

if you are using pp2, in playback settings set external device to dv. In pp1.5, playback settings will be playback on dv hardware and desktop

Let me tell you what i´m doing as for you to see where im going wrong

1) connect camcorder via firewire to pc. Camcorder is DV out only (so maybe that is the problem)
2) connect via video cable (RCA) camcorder to tv. (Camcorder is audio/video out only)
3)in pp2, playback setting to external device. dv25i shows (i have two monitors)
4) turn on camcorder (position? player/camera)
5) nothing shows!

I guess its the DV out problem... i dont want to use the DVX to not mess up the heads.

It wont "mess up the heads" because you will only be using the camera circuitry and not the record mechanics.
