External Monitor suddenly not recognised...

Bear with me on this one guys...Its a thinker!!

After happily editing away with my MBP hooked up to my PAL monitor, i have gone in today to find something strange...When i open up FCP now, the footage doesnt appear on the monitor - just my MB screen. The monitor is connected ok as the desktop background is there and i can move my pointer onto it.
I have gone in to adjust the Desktop Cinema Displays config in the Audio/Video setup, but the option had disappeared...
The only options I had were Firewire PAL (missing) and None, with the FireWire PAL checked. I checked the None , and now the FireWire option has gone too, leaving me with just the 'None' option!

The FCP user manual says to try View > External Video > All frames, but when I do this the dropdown window closes as normal, and when i go in to it again to check it, it's reverted back to 'Off'.

i have tried 'Refresh AV Devices' too, but to no avail

The manual also says that if there are no secondary displays connected, the Digital Cinema option will not be there, but the computer reecognises it..

I am well and truly stumped! Any advice? Would re-installing FCP sort it?

Cheers

actually, after trashing the prefs, i get the FireWire missing option back again but still no Digital Cinema Display. I have to show my footage to a client the day after tomorrow and i am a bit scared of something going wrong if i uninstall and re install FCP...

Im outta ideas trying to think of some , when i had a problem with this, it was fixed by refreshing the devices, and then setting it to ALL FRAMES. You are obviously using 5.1.1 right?

Yeah I am. The only other thing that might have been something to do with it is, yesterday Safari corrupted and I had to re-install OSX again, but without erasing the HD, just reinstalled the apps. i did have to create a new account again like when you first get it out of the box. Do you think this might have something to do with it?

Anything is possible at this point. In the meantime, you cant just burn a DVD or export to Quicktime to play full screen for the client to view, and once thats done with, backup and reinstall everything?

He wants some input on what goes where, unfortunately. So the dvd idea's out (but a good one..)

I can drag the canvas window over to the monitor and incease the window size which will do the job until he's happy. Then I'll try a re-install.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway mate, All the best:beer:

you too, good luck with that, im sorry, i couldnt help, and sorrier that no one else came in with a solution. Dont give up hope though, my suggestion is that you head over to the apple.com discussion pages and see whats up there! You might find your answer very soon.
