NYC 35mm Adapter Shootout - Call for Adapters

Ok Guys, I got my RedrockMicro HD. So NYC has its own RR. I am trying to play with it with a DV camera (then with HD)& going to order FollowFocus ... I am looking to collaborating with someone to experiment with it before I shoot my short. Any volunteers?

I'm willing to help out. I'd really like to learn more about 35mm adapters. As long as it is either after work hours or on the weekend. Let me know.

Just tripped across this. To be fair to the manufacturers of each unit, I hope you've giving them all an opportunity to have their most recent product represented in the shoot-out. Otherwise, units with outdated achromats, etc. could be tested when in fact problems could already have been addressed, etc.

If the manufacturer is willing, then they can ship the unit out to a designated person for testing & return shipping.

Also keep in mind that the term "shoot-out" usually indicates a test to see what the best ones are ... not a fair comparison if you're looking to include such a broad range of adapters, from the entry level $200 dollar units up to the $10K+ units. Hopefully you'll have categories for the shoot out.

Lastly, someone else has already mentioned it, but try to have as similar of lenses as possible (i.e. all 50mm 1.4's, etc.).

this isnt really a "who is best" kid of exam. I am heading up the testing and stff. its more of an examnation of the image of each adapter.

I will not call a winner.

people will judge for them selves.

Especialy because not all theadapters will have FD mounts. Therefore we wont be be able to use the same lenses there by invalidating any comparisons.

Exactly Timur. This is an opportunity for folks in the NYC area to see the adapters in use, rather than looking at pictures and short video clips of them. That's the beauty of it. I'm not all that concerned about the term shootout being misleading. Norm, your shootout was excellent and hugely informative, but lacked one thing, hands on experience. We will attempt to make everything as equal as possible, but in the end, everyone will make their own judgment. Frankly I think that's better for ALL the adapters present. Certain people will gravitate to different adapters that work for them. I doubt very much that our humble 35mm adapter event will have any negative impact on the sales of adapters like these or that any manufacturers will be upset about being underrepresented.

Sandesh, I'd love to help you out too, although I'm also restricted to after work and weekends. Let me know.

Okay, I understand now. Just thought it would be something where the results may be posted, etc. ... which would again concern manufacturers about making sure their best/newest unit was represented, etc.

In order to faithfully represent the 35mm adapter community I will take one for the team. I will be accepting the latest adapter available from any company who is interested in having their product tested by the NY wing of the DVXuser board. All in the name of science! Just PM me and I will send you my address.

P.S. No I'm not kidding. I will seriously accept any 35mm adapter from any company for the shootout. I know it is quite generous of me.

Alex,
Sandesh, I'd love to help you out too, although I'm also restricted to after work and weekends. Let me know.

Great! Our timing seems to match. Most of the time I am in NYC. PM me your contacts or feel free to get in touch with me at sandesh@abyssfilms.com or call me 203 613 9296.

Also I would like to volunteer on any film project with my tools after work and weekends. No single person can finish a film.... I think creating a local group which can share ideas/tools/equipment/resources in NYC/CT/NJ area will be great.

35mm Shootout.....
I think people are taking it too seriously... People have made movies with the adapter some are filmout. Whatever the result of comparision even after the purchase of RR; If I can get DOF straight from camera I will throw away the adapters the very next moment.

Im thinking we do set ups of scenes and all film the same time and whatnot. Leave the rez cards and stuff for Barry and crew to crunch the numbers and we do a real world type test and even some run and gun.
We should also make sure there is enough distance between everything and take measurements.

I just want to pop my head in and say I'm in, again. I have two things going at the moment -- beta adapters that represent approx. 90% their release counterparts, the functional differences are in some ways trivial, but above all I actually have them sitting here ready to go; and the other side of it is that I should have both the Go35Pro and SD release models done by end of this month, provided the new achromats hit their mark (the 25th of July, I'm told).

So, either way I should have something to show up with that would represent my work well, and am excited to do so.

Personally I'm not a fan of res charts and color cards, but if that is how it has to be then I will do so. However, I would only engage in those sorts of tests provided they are paired with "real world" shooting situations. I've been spending a lot of energy lately trying to get away from what I feel are the endless "armchair DP" conversations that seem to pick everything apart to the molecular level (witness the recent G35/Similo contest/argument) because I find them ultimately to have very little to do with producing compelling images (the reason we all got excited by these adapters in the first place).

Accordingly, I think the reviews/shootouts need to not only incorporate whatever optical litmus tests people feel they need to have in place, but they should also include other considerations, like: how long does this unit take the average peson to set up; how much does it weigh; does it require power; does it generate audible sound; what "feel" does it impart to the footage; etc. Collectively, these things are for me ultimately more important than how many lines an adapter resolves because they all contribute to a likelihood of actually producing work.

Sorry if this is a bit of a rant, but I just wanted to reiterate my concerns and vocalise support for others who feel similarly.

YEA!!!!!

I totally agree. this is what ive been trying to get across for years here. THoes of you who are shopping for adapters, dont wait to make something, just ccuase you dont have it. Do it now, light it right, and it will look great. The adapter is just the icing, but without cake icing is just sugar. and sugar makes you fat..... And thats bad for your heart.... im not sure where im going with this but i agree with Jim.

I went through the whole thread but I did not see the date. Is it on the 25 this month? Where?

The date hasn't been set yet, but the place has. It will be somewhere in NYC.

Date will be set soon. I finally found a new apartment which was one of the many reasons this became difficult to plan for this month. Plus, we need Two-Hip back in the saddle. We will be shooting for the middle to end of August, and will notify everyone when the final date is set. Thanks for the sustained interest.
