Smallest vibrating dof adaptor? (full res footage inside)

Three full resolution low light test clips from HVX200 with my vibrating DOF adaptor in XviD avi:
1. SLR lens @ f1.2 (22mb)
2. SLR lens @ f16 (18mb) or maybe it was at f8
3. Without SLR lens (9mb)

Only optical element in this design so far is an EE-A microlens screen.
Does this design need a $300+ achromat? I quess not.

But as Cavision`s universal rails mount doesn`t accommodate HVX we were forced to lay everything up on a table and couldn`t align everything perfectly not to mention focusing HVX on focusing screen hence the soft image.

Adaptor itself looks like this:

Let me know what you think.

are you sure its the smalles :D

anyways i think it looks really slick, and i like how theres only once cord sticking out.

the footage looked ok, its got potential. but like you said you werent able to test it fully yet so i cant really say much about it.

Oh, forgot to mention that only external part needed for adapter to work is the macro tube with it`s internals and the cord to 1.2v battery, everithing else is just rails and mount.
It`s only 55mm in lenght and 64m in diametre in its smallest working state.

I noticed that you have corrected the exposure in the footages. How much light loss do you see with your adapter? Could you post grabs of scenes with and without the adapter, without changing the exposure, but reframing to keep it more or less the same FOV? Basically, I want to see how much darker a scene is with the adapter on (with 50mm or 55mm at F1.4).

Looks promising. The GG is slanting a bit but it's interesting that there doesn't seem to be any vibration on the visible edges. I suppose you could always zoom in a bit more and that the slant would be corrected in the final product. This is a vibrating GG design right?

Here you can see lihght loss with 55mm lens set at f2:
lightloss_f2_55mm.jpg

It`s a 100% crop from GS150 footage.

You cann`t see any vibration because it`s vibrating so fast end evenly across the entire frame.

Our goal is to provide this vibration unit to DIY community along with how-to instructions for making this kind of compact DOF adaptors.

Looks very promising. Any ball-park figure on the price? This could actually give the Brevis a run for it's money. It's looking like maybe about 1-stop or less of loss.

According to a post by Toenis on dvinfo.net, the oscillator part will be about $50. Sounds good to me. :D

First batch will be ready for shipping hopefully in Monday plus 7-14 days to almost anywhere in the world.

And yes, it will cost $50.00 excluding focusing screen and shipping, PayPal only.

To support my favorite DIY community I`ll give out another secret of mine: OEM Canon EE-A microlens focusing screens are avialable here for $15.00
All my samples so far were captured with that exact screen.

Keep in mind that this design doesn`t require PCX lens and in most cases it even doesn`t require an achromat like Canon 250/500D.

Please also note that we are not selling anything officially jet but feel free to ask any questions.

Cheers,

Hi Toenis,

Do you eventually plan to sell an assembled unit, complete with any necessary macros, tubes, etc. for the DVX?

Daniel Wee

Daniel, eventually maybe but no for now bcause there are so many great DOF adaptors out there already.
It`s not that hard to DIY.

Toenis: What do you think about using Canon EE-A screen in static design? Or is it possible, that you make some grab from your adaptor with oscillator switched off vs. switch on? Thanks.

I think that using EE-A screen in static design is not that good idea or those OEM ones are not genuine Canon products. I just got amazing results with original EE-S screen.

Just some 100% frame grabs to show EE-S bokeh in low light at max gain.

Some raw wide angle fun here! 19mm f4 in that low light ;)...
It`s deinterlaced and lock your player`s aspect to 4:3 if it doesn`t to that automaticly.

I hope never to use anything else than EE-S screen as it does what the name says - super precision focusing.
Since my 8" LCD died on set I was forced to focus and frame everithing on camera LCD for 4 hours and I was absolutely blown away that it was so easy with this screen plus that nice bokeh.

(Unfortunately) CINEDOF™ beta vibrator / noise reductor was turned on all the time.

Cheers,
T

Hey Toenis,

If you're going the route of selling a fully assembled unit let me know! I'm interested! (and i'm lazy and a lil clumsy to diy anything lol)

Hi Toenis,

Great work on the oscillator. Its been a long road since your first conceptual design and now you have done it. Good for you. I noticed you are using the 12mm motor probably from BGMicros. I have some of these motors but they are not strong enough to vibrate the screen. I see your design is effective in using these motors.

By the way, the above link you provided is for a 50D screen. Is this the same one you are using? Is it the EE-A Microlens screen, all matte? Not sure if it is. Would like to order but have to be sure before I do that. Thanks in advance.

Yes it`s OEM Canon 5D (EE-A) microlens screen I used for HVX200 sample clips.
And yes it`s absolutely without markings.
But I would highly recommend EE-S screen for $35 - it has better bokeh and focusing is so much easyer plus it comes with case and a tool to handle the screen without touching it.

Our 3D division just got back from IBC, Amsterdam (RED was there too) so I hope we can have the first batch of CINEDOF™ oscillating screen holders for the end of the week.

Regs,
T

Hi Toenis,

Where can you suggest I can get the EE-S screen you recommend? Not sure where they are selling this screen. Thanks.
