3d layers in Vegas...

I know vegas offers 3d positioning of video layers.

The question are the centre points of each video anchored to the same world co-ordinates or they are free to move. In laymans terms, can i keep a video layer. And have another video layer right behind it but with a uniform gap seperating them. I hope you understand what im explaining. Its like a sandwich with an air space between. Ive seen its possible in AE. Just want to know if Vegas 3d layers can do this.

What ? Not even one reply to this post ??? LOL. Ok im embarassed. O probably i over complicated the question ?

Parent one track to the other. Look for the arrows with the right angle in the track headers.

Hey Cat...Thanks...but i dont get what you mean. Im talking about putting one layer behind the other with an inch (hypothetically) of space between them. Think 3d greenscreening. This is tricky to explain here. Imagine greenscreening with a space between the 2 videos. So if you turn them together a little or something you can see a slight difference compared to the background. Maybe ill make a 3dsmax mock up of what im trying to explain.

Sorry, here's more details. First, in the Track Motion window change the compositing mode to 3D Source Alpha for your tracks. The window will change to show you additional controls for the Z plane. In the Track Motion window, set the Z Position property to separate them (like the one inch example you used). Do this for both tracks, or more if you have them. Now look on track 2 in the header section, on the right hand side there's an arrow with a right angle pointing down. Click that to give it a parent relationship to the upper track; you'll see it indent when you click. You'll also see in the upper track on far left new controls for the Parent Track Motion. Change the Composite Mode to 3D Source Alpha and click to open the Parent Track Motion window. Now you can grab the box in the middle to spin your tracks on X, Y, or Z axis, both will be controlled by this one parent track window.

Hope this helps. Gotta run right now but let me know how it's working for you.

They are free to move. I have a tutorial on my web site on how to use 3D Track Motion using world coordinates to change the pivot point that might clear things up for you. You can find it here: 3D Track Motion: Changing the Pivot Point.

As MisterCat said, change the Z coordinates to separate them. Then parent them together under another track to the move them in unison. I have another tutorial on Parent Motion that shows you how to do that.

Both you Guys...I cant thank you enough for the help.

Im reading the tutorial.

Will post back on what i understood.

Thank You !

Johnny i read your tutorial. Nice one. It seemed to explain pivot motion etc around an anchor point and also displacing the natural anchor point. Etc. But i didnt see 2 layers one behind the other literally. But i assume this must be possible. Its possible to move one layer behind the other in z depth right ?

Hi Cat ? Your explanantion is a lil complex for my understanding. I think your explaining parent motion where you can have parent and child hierarchy tracks right ? Ofcourse this i know a little about because the same applies to 3ds max too. Only there they are 3d objects and hre they are layers.

By the way Cat ....there this guy on our forum who made a video of skycaptain in a home video with beautiful compositing. Entirely done in Vegas. Have you seen that video. I tried downloading it but the link seems to be down. You can find his post on the forum by seaching "sky captain" or with the words together. Everybody said it was amazing. Ive never got a chance to see this. Do you have any idea how we can get to see this. I pmed the creator of the clip who is a member on the forum. But theres no reply. Any ideas ?

When you parent/child the tracks together, an additional track motion button appears to the left side of the parent track:

Click that, and then you can control them as one. HOWEVER, the parent track must contain one of the layers or it will not work the way you want it to work.

That explains some strange things I was seeing... thanks for that.

I haven't seen or heard of this clip but I can try searching. Sounds like something interesting...

Yup. I have created a new tutorial just for you to show you how to move a video back in 3D space and then rotate the two videos while maintaining that space.

You can find it on my web site. It’s called 3D Parent Motion. There is a sample video playing and project file (veg) on that page. Enjoy,

Hi Johnny,

Thank you so much for the tutorial. Very kind of you to take the time to do this. That was exactly what i was looking for. What version of vegas do you use please ? And if the front layer had a chroma or alpha channel will we be able to see the back layer through the front layer ? You see i dont intend to use them in animated rotation as your sample. But the space between concept is dead on what i was looking for. But i intend to keep front layer on front and back layer...ummm.... at the back..lol. Now i want certain areas of the front video to be hollow and showing the back video. These hollow areas may be via chromakey or alpha areas. Is this possible ? and would both alpha and chroma work for this result ?
