Just lost my filmmaking virginity yesterday with first short film!
Sorry to waste your time on this beginner stuff.
Got 25 min of 24p adv letterbox footage (some 100 pauses in it, never took the tape out) with my dvx100p.

Tc mode is set to df, tcg to rec run, first rec tc to regen, tc preset to (----).

Got FCP 5.1.

I went through capture chapter in the manual. All I want to do is ‘capture now’ and chop it up in fcp.

In capture settings, device control is firewire ntsc, capture dv ntsc 48 khz. I also tried the 48 khz advanced pulldown 2332. in both cases, after hitting play and ‘now’, it captured at 30fps.

when you play it back in the final cut, the video is lagging behind sound. Also, there is a lot of aliasing. Is that because of the 30fps?

Here’s the strange thing. When I go back to beginning of tape, and capture, say a minute or two with the pulldown capture (the footage contains multiple pauses and camera being off, just like rest of the 25 minutes, not one continuous take) – it saves in 24p, no video lag, and only a little aliasing (why is there aliasing anyway?)

Why can it capture a bit in 24p but not the whole 25 minutes?

I read the stickie about capturing in 30 fps…can I take the aliased, lag-video 25 min clip I captured and do the pulldown? How would that be done? Manual says quite a bit about pulldown in regard to outputting to video, but nothing I came across about converting captured clips.

Thank you so much!

When ever shooting check to make sure your time code doesn't reset to 0. This happens if you review and/or power off. If you have time breaks then FCP get's confused because the pulldown isn't consistent.
FCP works best when you log takes and then do a batch capture. Capture now tends to invite problems. That's why it works at the start of your tape.
Go through the tape and set start/end log points between time cide breaks (start and stop)

You can try to run it through Cinema Tools but it's likely to be confused as well.

Regardign setup: Use the Easy Setup and show all. Select NTSC DV Advanced Pulldown. You're done. Capture settings and sequence settings from here on will be correct.

Double check your audio settings in the camera. Make absolutly sure they are set to 16-bit, 48khz. The camera can do 12-bit, 32khz sound, also. If you record 12-bit and capture 16-bit, this is the most common reason for audio going off sync in FCP.

If Scottdvx100's suggestion of using the Easy Setup, etc, doesn't work, then just capture at normal NTSC-DV 29.97fps. You can use Cinema Tools to do the pull down later. What you'd do is Capture Now the whole tape. Then highlight that capture in your Bin, and use the DV Start/Stop Detect (check eventdv.net, search for "cut lines", I have a tutorial on using this tool) to cut it up into sub-clips. Then take those into Cinema Tools to do the pull down. There's a great tutorial on this at Ken Stone's FCP site, don't know the URL off hand. But that's IF using the NTSC-DV Advanced Pulldown capture setting doesn't work. It should, I've never had problems with Capture Now getting a whole 24pa tape captured.

gentlemen, thank you both for your kindness. the solution turned out to be stopping the capture just before end of footage on the tape (the only tc break). may a mike never dip into your frames!
