Rap Music and decline of real music

K-Fed will have a large audience of younger female fans and he will have (probably) limited success. He won't be Britney but soon enough he may actually have money of his own.

I think Rap is the worst thing to happen to the world of music.

Old white guys usually do. :) Save for the ones who makes tons of cash from it after taking the music from the ghetto and pimping it on the airwaves. I mean rap only became this bad after that. No more Run DMC, KRS-1 or Public Enemy only booty shaking and bling bling now. The VMAs always suck. I don't watch them anymore and I don't know why anyone does. It's all like a blur to me, it seems that there was a VMAs just three months ago with P. Diddy hosting (or maybe they just reran the show so much it carried over to the next year). Whatever. As crappy as modern rap is, it's still the one black music white people couldn't snatch from us like they did Blues and Rock. Plus I've personally never seen a rapper lip synch.

Naaaw. I hated it when Run DMC came out and I was 14 :nads: .

Rap is the most unoriginal thing in music today. Scratch that; in the last 10 years. We can only hope it burns out eventually with Gangsta Rap and Bling Bling being The Village People of the genre.

Yeah, that white dude named Eminem is a hack; lacks originality. :love4:

I can't speak for Rappers lip synching anymore than I can for their ability to play their own instrument and write thier own music. Oh wait ....

Nevermind. :kali: :violent5:

And the black man invented the blues and rock and roll. But the white guy perfected it :nads: :nads: :kali: :love4: .

(Hope you take this in good fun)

It's really been sad to see the disintegration of black music. Black music has given so much to the world, i.e. blues, jazz, rock'n'roll (which, of course, grew out of the blues), soul music and r&b. What a pedigree. But to see it supplanted by rap is just a crying shame. It would have been nice to see black music evolve rather than devolve into rap.

Gangsta rap became popular when the white guys found out they could exploit it for cash. If I remember most people hated "gansta rap" until the media jumped on it and made it "controversial". No one cared before that, then suddenly PM Dawns and the KRS1 and the Public Enemies (rappers who were artistic and had a message) started disappearing.

I'm not a fan of a lot of his lyrics but he can flow. A white kid coming from proverty just like many urban youths. That's where he gets his cred. Although "Ice Ice Baby" was hot back in the day but you could look at Vanilla Ice and figure out he was full of it. Although the song was cool even though now people say it wasn't. Someone bought all those millions of albums. ;)

Ah, actually Ice-T had a rock-hop band, and they played their own as well as "Black" of Nappy Roots and some others. Ironically rappers tend to be very technically savy as many of them produce their music on computers (as does everyone else including modern rockers who use computers to enhance their sound - even Metalica - gasp!).

Didn't know stealing was the mark of perfection. Ask Big Mama Thornton how much she got paid for one of Elvis' biggest hit hound dog. So Elvis is less original than most rappers. At least rappers make out their own lyrics :) - zing!

Of course, with the beauty of it being it opens the door for somewhat of an intellectual musical history lesson without being to heavy handed or too far off subject. And the VMAs still suck and even P. Diddy couldn't make that any better!

I respect your angle on the music.

Body Count - Now there is a band I liked. But for every artist we speak of, there are 10 more that are packaged and pimped (Yes, by old fat rich white dudes but also by old fat black guys; a label is a label and the artists are always gonna get screwed in the end.).

It's as bad as Pop (Spears, Paris Hilton, etc)

Off topic but read:

Give me guitars, give me musicians, give me music that means something. I want guitar oriented rock, 1965 to 1975 vietnam era music, alternative, punk and new wave and r & b (Mainly 60's through the mid 80's r & b) hard rock and metal .....

Hate Gangsta Rap; loathe it.

Good cross section. For me, the most iconic song of the Vietnam era was written by an white man, and interpreted by a black man. I love the music of the late 60s early 70s and there were many great bands and musicians from that era, but no song can come close to marking the era the way Jimi's version of "All Along the Watchtower" does.

I'm all about 80's rock... More progressive modern rock, a little punk in there, and some emo... Also love the soundtracks, and I get a little pop in with my Kelly Clarkson... oh, and a lil' country once in awhile...

Hard to argue that this might be one of the best rock songs ever made.

Vietnam Era song that defines it for me ?

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane

But these would definatey make the soundtrack on my film

These Boots Are Made For Walking - Nancy Sinatra
Nowhere To Run - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
For What It's Worth - Stephen Stills
CCR - Fortunate Son

Honestly pop music is only good for producing skinny blonde girls (many with ties to Disney) with questionable musical talents. Who watches Britney Spears for her "music". Honestly I think she's cute and like to see her dance (if one can call it that) but I feel about her like I did about Madonna in the eighties. Conversely (to my suprise) after listening to old mix tapes Madonna actually had quite a few songs I liked. I think some of Brit's stuff is cute but I'm a grown man so it's just not the same. Alanis maybe be scary but musically she's alright. (and has been scary for awhile - I think she lost something). I'll admit Christiana actually has talent and Shirkira is a great dancer (her incorporation of belly dance is certainly nice). For me Kelly Clarkson is high energy and generally fun to watch.

I am a rock man myself, but will admit I prefer the "new" Metalica. See my music was Phil Collins (if you don't know "In the Air Tonight" is one of the songs that inspired Miami Vice), Michael Jackson (when he was a black guy), Janet Jackson, Bon Jovi, Steve Winwood, Jody Watley and a host of others. Rappers like PM Dawn (poetic rappers), KRS1 and Public Enemy (self-education rappers) were all the rage then.

All of this music was wiped out by the horrible hip-hop stylings of people like Luke and his "2 Live Crew" and NWA. While this was alright when thrown into the mix it became a staple of the hip-hop genre and took over everything else. What happened to songs like "Get yo momma off of crack" which was great song about crack in the innercity. The question being how does one keep the children off of drugs when the parents are on drugs. We don't get a lot of stuff like this anymore. Let's not pretend "Milk D" was a message rapper but while the song is actually somewhat funny the message was serious. Remember "Self Destruction" and Public Enemie's "Fight the Power" and their hit with Anthrax "Bring the Noise"? Remember the first rock/rap hit (Aside from Blondie's questionable stray into hip-hop territory): Walk this Way (Run DMC and Aerosmith). I'm only in my thirties but this is making me feel old so I'm going to stop now.

The 90's ushered in Nirvana who I liked, (but I can't stand Pearl Jam). Cobain's incoherent rambling were fun to try to unravel to figure out what the heck he was was talking about. I actually found one song was about Courtney Love (Frances Farmer will have her Revenge on Seattle) which I discovered after watching a doc on Kurt and Courtney and findng out her name was Frances Farmer. I liked Soundgarden and Redhot Chilli Peppers are tight too (but even they incorporate hip-hop elements). Rob Zombie makes some interesting stuff (If I had a budget I would incoporate some of his stuff into my action films) but I think he's found a way to make every song from the Dragula beat.

As far as white rappers go Beastie Boys were an all around fun group who didn't really try to be black as much as they just had fun with the music. I think the new breed of white rapper is more savy, some do try to be "down" while others just do their own thing, but like I said the money is on the teenage girl. K-fed's album will drop and if MTV plays his videos he will make a little cash. The smart thing to do is get a little fame here and shop it to the overseas video stations as much as possible - I'm famous in (insert european country here).

Music is a universal language and I find it funny how actually devisive it has because. Does anyone remember in the late eighties/early ninties when we had rock, hip-hop, R&B and all the other genres and they all existed under one nice unberella. I mean you simply listened to it or not.

Things seemed to have changed drastically and everything is about will the music sale and yes with hip-hop everyone's pimping it but nothing's new. Rappers like Common don't have a shot without half naked booty shakers in the video. I don't mind a booty shaker for time to time but it's gets to be a bit much. And what about CiCi Dobson? A black girl who rapped over rock. No one was having it, but Kid Rock is all good. I don't know. These are things I just noticed. I was around to get to see some things change drastically when it comes to music and I'm a music lover. I was making videos in my head before MTV existed. I think many of us did the same.

I've seen this before. It's actually very interesting how money is acutally made in the music industry.
