who uses the at897 with their DVx outside and what are your impressions of the microphone. I am looking for a shotgun mic for outside interview stuff. Not sure if the at897 is what i need or maybe a hand held Shure..

i tried the me66 outside and it was terrible, it picked up everything..

thanks

I have used an 897 many times in the past, but your question is begging many more questions. Did you use wind protection (blimp and/or windsock) when using your mic outdoors? If not, you're going to get all sorts of extra noise picked up.

For interview situations you can also do a quick search to see a lot of different options.

Bottom line, the 897 isn't terrible, but for a few more $$$ the 4073a is better thought of. Or, check for a used Sennheiser 416 - I got mine for about the same price as a new 4073a.

Saturnin,

We've had lots of joke threads going on lately, but you didn't put a ;-) on your post so I'm reading as you put a real sock on it, as opposed to a windsock or other wind protection. If this is the case, it won't work. It's like putting the foam windscreen on - all it does is provide a little pop protection. Not real wind protection. You need a full on blimp or one of the Rycote partials to start to get any measure of protection.

Either way, yes, the ME66 is a noisy and poor sounding microphone. You can do a search for ME66 and see lots of opinions on it.

ahah joke threads..nah.. had a wind sock on it. Who woudl put a real sock on a mic??? There are so many therads on here about this same issue and i know that is been talked to death. Thats why i didnt ask wich mic is better, lol.

I've used an AT 897 outside (with a Rycote softie) with great results.

I also have a Shure SM58. It would probably be fine for outside interviews...but overall I've had such good results with the 897, I've seen to need to change.
