Emmy Opening in Poor Taste?

i hate to be the a**hole on this one. but in all honesty--i agree that it was insensative by the network to air the openning, but they're running a business. business is about money, and i don't think they lost any by airing it. i know it sounds rude, but i might have done the same thing. sorry.

dont feel like an a$$ man, it's your opinion. If there weren't people who agree with you this wouldnt be the hot topic that it is.

But do beware you are looking like the minority right now and dont feel overwhelmed if opposing viewpoints, (like mine!), bombard you with mighty freedom force. :)

i would imagine there was a lot of sress around the decision to air that piece and with all the chaos that went into final preperations, a change would have been beyond difficult to pull off. Still, I think they should have pulled the opening. and i think being insensative does cost them money in the long run.

Good point, JY Blue.

If they cut the opening sequence, would people stop watching NBC? Nope. They wouldn't even realize it was cut.

If they keep the opening sequence and people are upset by the insensitivity, would people stop watching NBC? Maybe. Maybe not.

A risk worth taking? Probably not.

Actually, it probably was better than expected for NBC considering awards shows are usually long and boring, and outside of the E! Networks "fashion police", nobody cares about the Emmy's the day after, let alone 3-4 days after.

So, under the any publicity is good publicity, this is probably better for them than if they pulled it.

We're talking about NBC here, not some little network that most people never see. If the publicity is bad and hurts ratings, it hurts advertising, which hurts NBC. It's not like people will say, "Huh, NBC sounds edgy. Maybe I should go check it out." like they might for Spike TV or something most people haven't been exposed to.

I guess they could have given some credit to the audience and led with a disclaimer apologizing that they didn't have time to change it and shown some compassion for the victims.

It's easy to be critical of their decision after the fact, if it were mine to make I would have erred on the side of caution and not shown the opening.

I think we have a winner!

Yeah because disclaimers mean so much to people...

Who cares. A plane crashes in Lost. That' what happens. That is what they are spoofing. We all know lost. Planes Crash. I'm tired of all this censorship talk. If you don't like something, change the channel.

Here, Here. And in response to the original poster of "am I being to sensitive" YES YOU ARE.

For those who comprehend the disclaimer they mean something...

Who cares? The relative of the victims on this tragedy. Who cares about the victims of Katrina, or the AIDS pandemic in Africa, or the next dissaster?

No one is talking about censorhip, just a little common sense and compassion.

I did change the channel. Konan Obrian is an idiot! But WTF, who cares what I think?

Disclaimers are a cop out. It's a CYA move and thats it.

"The following skit depicts an airline crash and may be disturbing to the families of the recent air tragedy. We apologize for the trauma."

"But here it is anyway! Enjoy!"

Who said anything about censorship?

Those who express offense, do so for a purpose, and the purpose is NOT to encourage more of whatever is offending them.

While not official censorship, it is certainly the application of a form of pressure with the explicit intent of unofficially achieving the same result.

and yet those who express glee are encouraging more of whatever is gleeful to them - thats OK? this is a slippery slope when you talk of opinions that are negative as a form of "beginner" censorship.

to express offense = unacceptable
to express glee = acceptable

not to be a flag waving patriot, but our ability to express whatever we feel - negative or positive - is what makes our country great. thats what i think most of us here on DVXuser strive for artistically - to make people think and have an opinion. to have people say whether they liked it or not, at least we made them think about it - which in my book would be a great success.

Asking a network to show sensitivity to the families of an airline disaster by not showing a comedy skit before an awards show is neither official nor unofficial censorship. Our freedom to create what we wish to create will be just fine. Believe me, I understand the desire to create whatever I want to create without anyone else telling me what I can or cannot do, but the Emmys are a commercial enterprise, not an art installation. People put pressure on commercial intrests in myriad ways.

I get a kick out of award shows. How many ways can we pat ourselves on the back while we make millions.

Plus not to get into this to deep but if we feel the plane crash was in poor taste what about the dateline skit at the end. It all is up to your level of sensitivity.

I am more concerend about the fact they had the balls to air K Fed in a live performance recently.... that is poor taste in my book.

Now that's something I think we can all agree on.
