Emmy Opening in Poor Taste?

...you would hope that the Emmy's or a similar program would be a safe haven from that emotional trauma.

Safe Haven? It is not the job of television or film to be a safe haven of any sort to anyone. We all have freedom of choice in what we glue our eyes to. IT IS true that the channel can be changed, or the power button utilized. It is the total and complete wussification of America that conjures up these ideas of having to tiptoe around and be so freaking sensitive to everyone. What offends me may not ever offend someone else. How could we possibly be sensitive to everyone all the time? And if you agree that we can't, then how do you choose who we'll cater to and who we won't.
The Emmy intro was a parody of a drama series that centers around a plane crash. They were mimicking that concept - not trying to make everybody cry while laughing their evils laughs backstage. Yes the crash in Kentucky was tragic but I would be willing to bet that for the few who may have possibly been offended, there were millions more viewers who did not make the connection, or simply did not care. That's the reality.

However, there is nothing wrong with showing sensitivity to people who have recently experienced a tragedy.

How about showing sensitivity to the other 299,999,950 Americans who didn't recently experience (this particular) tragedy? Why force them to go around acting like they had? Why tell them how they SHOULD be acting at "a time like this". Oh spare me.

To follow that logic, we could never have a drunk driver in any comedy routine, since on any given day, at least 2 or 3 deaths are supposedly caused by drunk drivers.

The best thing about taste is that its a lot like truth. Not very much (and some would argue NONE) of it is either good or bad. It just is, and everyone has their own version of it, and none are right and none are wrong. They're all just DIFFERENT.

I personally find it HIGHLY OFFENSIVE for ANYONE to PRESUME to tell me what I taste should or should not have. Who are they to presume to mandate good taste? Who SHOULD mandate good taste?

If Fox news is so bleeping offended by the Emmy's then they can simply refuse to cover the event next year. Of course THAT will never happen (because then they'd have to grow a spine and take responsibility for their outrage and forego some ratings and ad revenue).

I just found it's more (NBC's) stupidity than anything else. Nationally, it's a different ballgame. I didn't see this as a National issue (just a Kentucky one).

so now we regionalize tragedy? come on. that seems to be much more of a bad taste measure than any mentioned in this thread.

to me - no problem with the skit, it was the best part of the whole show. i do think we as a society (americans) are overly sensitive and coddled when it comes to tragic events, and that is an amenity we get from living in the top dog country.

most of us havent had to grow up worrying about being blown up as we swiftly visit a market to hopefully find fresh vegetables or bread. we havent had to endure days of hiding in our house afraid to step outside for fear of being executed because of our heritage. we dont worry about where our next bottle of water is going to come from. we're the country with the silver spoon in our mouth. so when there is something bad that happens, we flip out and and take great strides to hug our way into feeling better - but if there is something that might have a remote chance of bringing back those feelings of sadness or anger or remorse, people flip out.

now granted not all of us had it easy, but the majority has it pretty well comparatively. point being, when it comes to tragedy and our handling of it, we are not the strongest of nations and seem to take the stance of always being overly PC and overly sensitive - because we can.

and that sucks!

Not sure what's so hard about showing a little sensitivity. Nobody's rights are being trampled here. It's just a little social courtesy. There's little enough of that these days.

Or you could move on and not care so much about two unrelated events. Or in an extreme case, hit the power button on the TV.

when you no longer have a choice to press that power button then we will have a decent topic for discussion and concern.

Yep, I have my own little world of stuff, just like everyone else does.

There's more important stuff than something on TV, esp. meaningless fluff like celeb's celebrating themselves for all to admire.

Hairy.....get out more.

When was it that we became a nation of victims where our sensibilities so easily bruised that we started requiring people to take sensitivity training so as not to hurt anyone's feelings? Sheesh...we've become a nation of tulips. :furious3:

If I edited everything I do and say just to make sure I don't offend anyone, I wouldn't be able to do or say anything.

I think what cheapens the memory of those who died in that horrible accident is the media's fixation with the emmy's and not on those who actually died.

I see more about the emmy's controversy than I do about the families and stories of those lost. If I were one of those victims looking down upon this (in a non religious way :) ) I would feel angered that all my death did was spur some bullshi* hollywood controversy.

Actually, in this case, if the media wants to focus on the Emmy's then the victims' families might get a break from having a camera and a mic shoved in their face during their grieving period.

As to the whole debate - I'm with the "not in bad taste" camp. I didn't even see it, and I feel like I have. If there wasn't that crash people would have talked about how hilarious it was (and many people still are). This was not a shot at the crash, and in fact had nothing to do with a real life crash, recent or not. It seems that there can't be anything anymore that doesn't stir up controversy so the "vanillization**" of entertainment continues.

As for the apologies - when are we going to realize that you don't deliberately do somoething, realize you offended someone, then apologize (never actually meaning it) b/c you have to. When's this gonna stop? Either stick to your guns, or don't do it. Of course I don't mean to say that no one is ever remorseful, but I don't think NBC is (nor should it be) and they had to release this disingenous apology b/c people expect it.

whew.... sorry, that rant felt good. Most of my dvxuser posts are like, "...how do you take off the lens cap?" so its nice to enter the fray of ramblers, of which there are many superstars.

**This poster in no way wishes to offend vanilla in any way, and hopes that this will not cause any problems within the vanilla community.

You left out the second half of my post, which I deleted in full, because I thought it may be completely mischaracterized and get into politics. That second line should have told you I was speaking purely in a business-sense. But, I guess it's better to pick and choose your context when quoting.

I'm not going to engage in political discussions here, and don't want to be the reason the thread is locked.

Cheers.

The woos-ifying of America continues...................As I'm the sensitive type, I'm both offended and victimized by this thread.Who can I sue????Somebody call my lawyer...

WTF? I started a thread about an interesting topic and somehow this represents me not getting out enough?

I live in New York Fvcking City. I spend my life out.

Not sure why you consistently need to attack the poster as well as the message. Personality flaw? Or are you still young?

I want to tell you the opposite Hairy Lime! :)

Stay in more! Go home, lock the door, and never come back out. When you think you are more bitter and less sensitive you can come out.

:) jk with ya

I wish I had time to do that!

I'm not all that sensitive, seriously. But sometimes my sympathy gets the best of me. I'm a sucker for a sad story.
