Problems with installing external harddrive

Not sure where to put this, so I put it here.

I recently bought a Maxtor IDE Harddrive... PATA 160gb put into a drive enclosure.

Problem I'm having is that I don't see any drive popping up when I turn it on. It says the USB is connected, but there's nothing coming up in My Computer.

I have a Maxtor 120gb with the same setup and it works perfectly fine. But for some reason, this one doesn't... Is it the actual HDD or am I missing something?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Have you formatted it? If not you need to right click on My Computer, click Manage, double click storage, and double click disk management local. Your unformatted drive should be listed there. If you see it there, do a quick format.

What is possible is that the drive is jumpered as a "secondary" not "primary" device and the controller in your enclosure is only capable of addressing a "primary" device.

hmm... I do have the exact same enclosure for both HDD's I own. Is it possible to "un-install" a hardware? I don't really need the other HDD at this moment.

Ok, I got it!

Isaac, you were right on the mark. I just completely missed it. I ended up adding partitions (no idea what that is) and formatting it. Shows up now.

Thanks for the help fellas!
