Yet more 24pA importing issues: every 5th frame repeated?

Ok, not sure what might be wrong here, if anything...

I've never worked with 24p before, but anyway.... I am using FCP 4.5, and imported my 24pA footage using the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" setting under Easy Setup. Footage was successfully captured at 23.98, and I plunked it down in a sequence.

However, after scrubbing through the video... it seems that every fifth frame is repeated during playback. What's up? When playing back at normal speed, it doesn't look like anything is wrong, however.

Any help?

Could it be that your sequence isn't 23.98?

Apple-Zero your current sequence and see what its frame rate is.
Now that you've captured in 24 you need to edit in 24.

Ok, you're right... it's set to 29.97.

I'm really losing track of all these settings now... I made a new 23.98 sequence, threw some of my 24pA footage into it... but now I've noticed my footage is 29.97, because ye olde red render bars reared their head.

Now I'm lost.

Sounds like your capture settings didn't take. If the clips in the browser say 23.98 under "vid rate" you should be good to go. If not your clips of course will say
29.97 which is the reason why there are red render bars. Don't render out the project, select the clips and remove the pulldown from the tools menu and edit 23.97. Hi Mench :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Did that, and know the playback is extremely choppy in both the viewer and sequence timeline.

The only thing I can think of now is that the footage is not actually 24pA, but 24pN...

If it's 24pN instead of 24pA, you will need to open up Cinema Tools and convert your footage from 29.97 to 23.98. Then you will be able to cut it on FCP 23.98 timeline.

Ok, long story short... I figured out what is wrong.

The 24pA footage I have been capturing was shot on a tape that was blanked out - on a standard consumer cam at 60i. That is where all sources of conflict must have been generating.

I just opened up a fresh miniDV tape, shot a minute of 24pA, captured using the DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal setting, and all is well. The footage finally captured at 23.98. And I put it into a 23.98 timeline without any issues: no interlacting, no repeating frames, no choppy playback.

From now on, I will no longer blank my tapes before I shoot on them.

Whew... that was getting insanely frustrating.
