Round 2 - DVXUser Photography Contest

A couple of things... Remember, keep we're like AA for the first 24 hours, completely anonymous.

From that point, so technically Friday, say who did what...

Please make comments across the board though, both positive as well as constructive. The point of these contests is not to show off talent, images, or photoshop skills, but rather to improve composition, lighting, and overall photography skills. Constructive criticism is the reason we are doing this.

Congrats to everyone who entered, you're all winners just for entering, in my opinion, but my opinion does matter and we will crown a winner :)

My idea was to go back to the part of town I was in for my entry in Round 1 and look for a family without air conditioning (there are many and it's been around 100 degrees every day). I was hoping to find an obviously run down house with several people sitting on the porch... escaping the heat that's built up inside the house. Then post process it to B&W. That was the idea I had for "summertime", but my vacation plans got in the way.

It was nice and cool in the mountains, but it rained the whole time. On top of that, my truck broke down and we couldn't leave the cabin... :(

I started to submit this and title it "My escape from the Louisiana heat":

Real quick, just to be sure everyone understands:

You do not need to have entered a photography into the contest in order to vote or comment on the images. In fact, the most important part of these challenges is the commenting because your constructive feedback is what allows the artist to improve their compositional, lighting, and blocking skills for future projects.

I understand that it is a pain in the ass to comment on 30 images, but it honestly takes just a few minutes and you are giving someone who invested time into creating something feedback on how the image makes you feel and what they might do to improve in the future.

I ask that when you submit feedback, and please submit feedback, but when you do, please make it constructive. Something along the lines of 'this sucks' really doesn't help anyone.

Once again, please submit comments because that is what allows people to improve in on future projects. Thanks!

Thursday 12:00am EST

The pics are up now...

http://www.stffilms.com/Photos/index.php

Same everything as last time because the new server isn't fully config'd yet. Regardless, everything is up and running, use the same login and password as DVXUser (if you registered on the voting site last time you dont need to do it again)... Everything is set up and ready to go, so have at it, view, check them out, and throw down!

Great job!

-Jeremy

would be good to post the viewing link somewhere clear so that peeps dont have to swim through the thread to find it.

Are we cool to go ahead and do our 'reveals'?!

Yeah... say which is yours, what you did, reply to comments... that whole thing... Have at it.

EDIT:

I just posted a virtual novel about my submission 'Splash' and how I got the image...

I just posted on my picture: Dog Days of Summer.

Just wanted to show the before and after of my post-work on the image. (Note: most of my sweetening has to be done in post, as I have a very low-end camera)

AFTER

I was going for the dreamy "Purina dog commercial" look on this one. I got REALLY lucky with the lighting... I went out at about an hour before the deadline, grabbed some treats for my dog, and got her into a good spot, and snapped a few shots. I don't have a very good digital camera (I use my junky Nikon CoolShot camera) but I did a little post work on the image to get the look I wanted. Thanks all for the comments! This was a fun one, looking forward to the next round!

Nice, Bman...yeah, the light worked out well. So, what kind of puppy? She's a qt.

I'll claim this dog...

I appreciate all of the comments! minimal color processing...just bumped the warm tones a tad to bring out more of golden hour, and I cropped the dickens out of it - guess I should have composed it a little different! It was fun, and a great reason to get out and play with my dog!

She's actually not a puppy, she's 4. She's a Newfoundland Beagle, and yes, she is a cutie! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I think you should have left the grass sharp. It is a nice effect blurred but there is too much quality detail in the grass to get rid of it. Thats just me.

My picture was "shred". Yes it was a self portrait. As in ride down a hill lean over and snap the picture. And again I am fairly anti-photoshop for juicing up photos, so i left it untouched. I enjoy the all natural black and white aspect of photography. Hope you like it.

As you should...lots of work and thought went into that, and I'm all the better for reading about how you did it. By far, my fav shot of the contest.
