mounting mic in car interior - sanken cub-01

i have the sanken cub-01 mic and i have had excellent experiences with it for capturing audio inside of cars.

but i have had a bunch of problems getting it mounted and/or getting it to stay mounted.

it came with 2 pieces of double sided tape cut into a nice circle the same size as the mic.

i was hesitant to use the double sided tape they included because #1 i only had 2 pieces of it, and #2 it looked like it would be really hard to remove.

i finally tried one of the pieces and it worked great and yes it was REALLY hard to get it off.

i've tried gaff tape and all sorts of other things but its always hard to get it to stay put, especially when most of its mounting positions usually end up being upside down on the ceiling of a car!

has anyone come up with a really good solution for mounting mics in cars and/or positions like this?

i have found that gaff tape just isn't strong enough and in some cars it seems like they are treating the plastic and the fabric with some sort of a armor all or scotchguard that makes it hard to even tape down the cabling!

i need a better solution so the mic will just stay put and so i don't have to go back and re-tape the wire because its falling down after just one take!

excellent.

i have seen this stuff, i even picked up a package of it at gotham and considered it but someone said that the rycote stuff i already have is just as good.

but that was in reference to mounting lav's on people and their clothes.

so how sticky is this stuff and how hard is it to remove when stuck to something plastic in a car?

can you give me some ideas of where you have mounted your cub01 and did you use this for all of those mounts?

i just logged into trew and ordered a box of this stuff.

Get a bunch of boxes. I plow thru topstick like water. Ceiling, window, dashboard, seatbacks, plexiglass mounting plate, etc. Different cars get different results. I experiment around with it, but the ceiling usually works best.

The stuff is stickie as hell but alcohol will remove the excess gunk (not the drinking kind). The Rycote stuff is good but way more expensive.

Hey Wabbit, are you using the topstick to mount lavs on people too? I'm trying the Rycote undercovers for the first time on Sunday and yes, they are expensive.

Yes, they work great. Keep a pair of mini sewing scissors on hand to trim it to the size you want or pre-trim them beforehand. Either way it's a million times less expensive then Rycote.
