There are a lot of tapes out there...

Just wondering what all you DVXuser's preferences to tapes were.

mine is the Panasonic 63 minute master tape...

is there anything better out there?

I also buy my tapes from tapestockonline.com. Are there better places to buy tapes from?

cheers.

The best tape for DVX are MQ and PQ Panasonic tapes. They are the most professional tapes for MiniDV. I used DVCam tapes in my MiniDV camcorders and they didn't do better than PQ's. With Panasonic tapes I noticed improvements in color in my images. And they are very sturdy and reliable. I won't be using any other tapes besides Panasonic's from now on.

Whichever tape stock you choose, stick with it. In general, problems arise when one mix-and-matches different tape stocks.

Yeah, that's right. My advice is, stick to Panasonic MQ's or PQ's. I don't think there are any better tapes out there. Yet.

You will -not- get better color with one tape vs. another when dealing with digital video. It is the same way a Word document will not look any better backed up on a Memorex CDR vs. a TDK CDR.

Yes, better tape stock will yield better reliability and durability, so you should have fewer dropouts and the like. 1s and 0s will go on the tape the same way no matter what stock you are using, and that depends on the camera.

Well Kitsu, I'm telling you that I use one tapes with my sony camcorder and later I switched to Panasonic tapes. I didn't changed any setting on my camcorder and the image quality looked somehow better. Not much better but better. I switched back to the old tapes again and the old look was back. I must suspect that the reason for that is in the tape cause I was at that time using a small camcorder that hadn't much settings to adjust and I was allways recording with the same one. With both tapes the weather outside where I was shooting was the same with same ammount of light so the light isn't the reason. Also as I wrote before, even my friends noticed the difference in color with Panasonic PQ's. Maybe the tapes are more sensitive to light or something, I'm no technician or something, just telling you my opinion.

ok. Well i will probably stick with my panasonic master tapes. I use them and have never had a problem with them. They're 'master' tapes for a reason right?

Yeah, but kitsu is trying to tell you that all o' that don't count for nu'in. A tape stores 1s and 0s: nothing else. Reliability and durability are the only things that seperate good mini DV tape and bad mini DV tape.

I use JVC tapes, and I never have any problems with them. It does not matter for the image quality, but for reliability just stay away from TDK and Sony.

This is what the tape drawer should look like..
