Dolby 5.1 in Vegas...Are we authorized to use it officially ?

Hi, when we buy Vegas 6 it comes with dolby 5.1 encoding. But im being told by another member that we canot officially state this on our dvds. What does this mean. When we buy a product we are paying to be licensed users of the features that the software offers. Why is it that we cant state that our commercial dvd is presented in dolby 5.1. Or is the information which i heard wrong in anyway. There was one of our members telling us in one of the threads that there were some restrictions. Is this true ? I dont see the point of offering the dolby plugin then. They ask you to pay a higher amount for a feature and then expect you not to use it commercially ? Can someone clarify ?

Buying the tools and being licensed to display logos are two different things. I would check out Dolby’s Trademark page. They state:

"Use of Dolby logos on prerecorded content, packaging, manuals, or program guides requires the completion of a Trademark Agreement."

So off hand, I would say that you need to sign a Trademark Agreement.

Look at it this way, Vegas allows you to tweak the AC3 encoder any way you want. Perhaps Dolby only allows people to display their logo if they certify that they keep within certain parameters so that the sound is consistent on their playback equipment. It makes sense.

Basicly Vegas let you encode in AC3.

The use of the Dolby logo must be done with permission by them.

The tweaks you do with the AC3 are in the parameters of dolby digital. You should be able to play it no matter what.

No im still missing something.

1. Ok i understand about getting permission to use their LOGO.
2. But we are authorized to encode our commercial releases in Dolby 5.1 right ? Nobody can sue us for using dolby 5.1 commercially right (irrespective of displaying their logo)
3. Without using their logo we can simply state that our commercial release has dolby 5.1 right ? (since legally this is a fact, we buy a Merc you can tell the whole town you bought a Merc)

can someone answer these 3 points specifically ?

Correct. I've dealt with Dolby labs.

1) To use their logo you have to sign an agreement and go through a quality check process to make sure your work meets their standards and specifications.

2) When you bought Vegas you paid for the right to use the integrated Dolby licensed encoder.

3) You can promote the fact all you want. There are guidelines on their site outlining the do's and don'ts - what's legal, what isn't.

If you are still unsure, call them. They're very helpful and accomodating.

You can definitely encode your work as Dolby 5.1. You paid for the encoder so use it. It’s just their trademark logo you have to get permission to use.
