Yep, today i shot a reception for a friend with his FX1(on HDV mode)... I had an extensive experience with PD series, so i thought it would be a similar experience...
Made me really miss my DVX100...
-What a shity audio system.(Worse than Canon) I understand it doesnt have XLR input. But how do justify lack of seperated channels.. You cant use on camera mike with a wireless lavalier...It is either one, but not together... Audio wheel is absurd...
-I had a 750 w Tota, and a diffused 500w Omni (from quite a distance) for head table. I could barely expose with 2 aperture with 6db gain... If it was my DVX100, i could have gone with 4 aperture with 0 gain...
-Focusing is damn hard, ring is too sensitive, image is not sharp enough.. And in auto focus mode, it takes forever to refocus from background to foreground...
-Doesn't have 'indoor' and 'outdoor' whitebalance preset together. You can choose either one for the preset from the menu...(It does have 2 postion A and b where you can set up your manual white balace)
I guess that is it...Gotta sleep...

I really gotta jump in here. I know that the DVX is the holy grail camera of this board but I'm frankly sick of people bashing the FX1 in relation with the DVX. I have an FX1 and I'm perfectly happy with the image as well as the capability of the camera. Yes, it doesn't have XLR inputs but a Beachtek adapter will take care of that AND gives you separate channels control. It's unfortunate that Sony didn't decide to give the FX1 proforessional control but really as far as I'm concerned the on board camera might as well not be there because I'm never planning to use it, so the level of controls I have over it doesn't matter.

I've found focusing on the FX1 to be easy once I get use to the nature of the electronic servo. Actually I prefer the "thick" feel of the focus ring. At the risk of getting slammed by everyone, the focus ring on the DVX is a bit too small for me and it's just a bit too sensitive. Yeah, I know that a true servo ring is "better" but the point is that it makes very little difference what you used once you're familiar with the system.

The FX1 isn't as good in low light situation as I would have liked but I have used 750 w of just cheap halogen work light to light with no problem, without having to turn up the gain.

About the image not being sharp enough. Sharp enough compared to what? The DVX? The FX1 is an HD camera, the DVX is not. I'm not going to get into how its SD footage compares against the DVX but I have to tell you that the first HD footage I captured from the camera simply blew me away. It's plenty sharp enough for me.

Yeah, it doesn't shoot 24p, but I'm perfectly happy with that. Personally I have a great deal of trouble telling 24p footage from 60i (as far as the motion is concerned) and so does most of my audiences. I've used Magic Bullet in the past to deinterlace 60i footage into 24p and when I look at the result, I try very very hard to convince myself that 24p is indeed "better" but I couldn't. I prefer to achieve my film look through DOF, color correction, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I still think that the DVX is a great camera. It's just that I feel sometimes that people on this forum tends to jump on the bandwagon in assuming that the FX1 is crap and approaches it with a negative preconception. Sometimes I wonder if most of the people who jumps in to throw negative comment has ever own or try the FX1 for themselves or if they're just assuming that if it's 60i it's crap and if it's HDV then it's not "real" HD.

I agree with you. I've seen some horrific stuff shot on the DVX, and some great stuff shot on the FX1. For anyone who thinks the FX1 is crap just look at Macgregors stuff. He puts most DVX shooters to shame...

Every cam has its limitations and you compensate and work around those limits. I'm closing this thread down because there are countless your camera sucks threads floating around which don't accomplish anything.
