Vegas and DVCPRO HD

I am afraid Sony will develop Vegas into the HDV wannabe's of HD.
I still use Vegas to create WMV HD but not for long. FCP just has such a large user base and developers creating for it that now with the Intel manta at Apple it won't be long before you can run Vegas on your new Apple.

I hope someone at NAB gets a chance to ask the people in the Sony booth about giving Vegas native support for editing the HVX's DVCProHD codec. Please post any responses here.

Here is a statement directly from Sony about directly supporting the HVX:

"As announced at NAB, Sony Vegas 7 (Fall) will have extensive support for
XDCAM MXF files, including FAM mode, XDCAM HD, put to disc and
multichannel audio i/o. Over time, we plan on adding additional support
for other "flavors" of MXF but as of this writing we cannot commit to,
or provide a date for, additional MXF support beyond what has been
officially announced (same with any other functionality- we don't
release this info in advance)."

I was then told that the current solution is to use Raylight to edit HVX footage. In other words it sounds like they are adding MXF support with version 7 and they plan on including the HVX flavor of MXF in the future. While this is not a commitment or date, it's the most news that I've heard so far.

MXF and DVCPRO-HD are not the same thing. Everyone but Sony is using the same MXF file format (Op-Atom); Sony of course is completely proprietary as always, using their own flavor.

So adding proper/full MXF support would allow integration with Avids, or with the Thomson/Grass Valley Infinity, etc. Wouldn't necessarily mean integration with DVCPRO-HD though. We can hope, but I'm starting to wonder just how cold a day it will be before a Sony-branded product goes out of its way to support a Panasonic format.

Barry,

But would adding proper support for MXF allow Vegas to directly work with P2? It won't be fast, but at least direct.

I chose Vegas originally because it was the best software to go with my hardware.

If I decide that the HVX is for me (and it's looking good so far), and Vegas can't support it, then I will have to look at other options. I'm not going to choose my acquisition equipment based on the NLE I use; quite the opposite. It's all about the image, not the cutter.

Still, if it doesn't support it when I need it, and then supports it later as well as it does the DVX, then I will happily return.

But, that's a lot of ifs, amd until then, I've got plenty of DVX material still to cut, and nothing compares.

(It should also be noted that 24p HD support is, whether for HDV or DVCPRO HD, in a horrendous place in general as far as NLEs go. It's not just a Vegas issue -- it's kinda ugly out there.)

You can get Raylight, I wouldn't expect anything out of sony, if they do finally decide to support it, it won't be until v7 this fall.

I just ordered my HVX, p2 cards, and p2 store... but the final piece of my field of dreams is yet to be found! I have PC's only, what can I do until Vegas supports it? What options does a newbie like me have?

Raylight from DVfilm.com

I just searched on Vegas' site, it "appears" to me that version 6d now supports .mxf, am I smoking crack, yet again?

i believe if i am not mistaken from what i have read here in the forum that sony's mxf format is unique. they use their own and everybody else uses a different one. Not sure, but that's what I remember anyways. So still no mxf support for hvx.

I also hear Cineform is good. I haven't tried it myself tho. With any luck someone will come out with a better solution. I'm betting on the folks at Serious Magic.
