I know people whove had cops in their movies because they love being in front of the camera, and I know a guy who took plenty of pictures of this one cop, all he did was smile and give him the thumb.

Not to disagree. But if you want your message to be taken seriously, maybe you should start by changing your avatar. Using the image of V.I. Lenin is as offensive as using the image of Hitler, Stalin, or the swastika. You may believe whatever you want, but this image promotes communism, which is a hateful ideology and could offend some members (you guessed, I am one of them).bartoy said:It is so utterly ridiculous to me that police abuse their power in such ways. In many cases, they just tell you that you can't do something and if you challenge them on it, they might just take you in. It ends up being a no win situation.
But, we must challenge them. It is our duty as citizens to "speak truth to power" or else we allow and encourage the erosion of our liberties. It is in those moments that we have a duty to stand our ground. These are the moments in which liberty is truly in action. Real liberty. Not that type of liberty that has devolved into the belief that you are free as long as you can choose Coke or Pepsi.
It is time that we stand up to these arguments of "security" that are somehow couched in terms of either being "fer us" or "agin us." In reality, the only thing that has changed in the "post-9/11" world is how much the government can abuse the rights and liberties of their citizens in the name of safety.
What are we all living in the 50's?! Should we all take this advice and move out of America if we aren't speaking native american?XCheck said:I'd suggest you print your avatar on a T-shirt and move to Cuba.
Thanks.
Original Marx:bartoy said:...An original reading of Marx will allow you to see that what you were brought up under and what the world has come to know as "communism" was not what Marx had intended.
This is like saying 'Stalin was not as bad as Pol Pot'. Just because he was a bit less extreme, doesn't change anything about the methods he instituted - mass executions, concentration camps, confiscation of private property (see above), starting with the political opponents and ending with peasant farmers, the list goes on and on. If you find ANYTHING that the Nazis did but the communists did not, let me know - I'd like to be illuminated. Lenin is as guilty as the rest.bartoy said:...I do not think that it is fair to paint with a broad brush and suggest that Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, and the swastika could be considered equivalent. This is truly preposterous. The image of Lenin was appropriated after his death and I think that what your words speak to are the image of Lenin and not his ideas. As you most likely know, Lenin was opposed to Stalin and in his last writings foresaw the dangers of totalitarianism and urged his compatriots to take power from Stalin.
'he would most likely have been' vs. 'what he actually said, wrote, and did'. Let's talk facts, not what 'might have been'.bartoy said:...I do not think that it is fair to throw out the ideas and works of Lenin because regimes, to which he would most likely have been opposed,
Nathyn said:I agree with both sides on this one. We have the right to do a lot, yes but there are things that are just not smart. If a cop doesn't want to be filmed leave him alone (unless he or she is doing something that violates the public trust).
Sure. As long as one can opt out. I can easily opt out of reading stuff that I don't want to read, but it's much harder opting out of seeng stuff - if you know what I mean.bartoy said:As for the question on the avatar, I have serious problems with censorship and I believe that sometimes a feeling of "discomfort" is exactly what art and critical thought are supposed to produce.
