Is the DVX100B lighter than the DVX100A?

I'm not sure if any of you here can confirm it. A videographer told me that the DVX100A is actually heavier than the newer DVX100B. He mentioned that the board in the 100B is lighter & that's why overall it's lighter. Are any of you here aware of this? Since the board is lighter (according to this videographer) does it mean that the DVX100B is a bit more fragile than the older 100A? Thanks for all your replies.

DAMN YOU HUDSON!!!! I just spent five minutes to come up with that!!! I demand you remove your post so my "hard" work doesn't go for naught!!! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

There is virtually no difference in the weight of the two cameras. Your friend may have thought because we took the lead, arsenic and other harmful substances so that it would qualify for the RoHS ceritification that that would have changed its weight.

Nope, still a sturdy little state of the art DV camcorder.

What better & clearer explanation than from a Panasonic representative like Jan. Thank you Jan, that was the most concise & clear explanation that cleared up my doubts.

On another issue, will Panasonic incorporate holographic recording technology & recording media into their future line of professional/prosumer cameras? I heard that holographic technology can store 300GB of data on a disk the size of a CD. This would definitely be a God-save feature for us pro videographers, who have to deal with large video data. By the way, does the P2 cards used on the HVX200 use some sort of holographic storage technology? Just wondering. Thanks.

Holographic Blue Laser, a product that is way past due, but may not even be a reality until 2007, does show promise as an archive device. The biggest problem in the production scenario is that the write speed needs to be consistantly fast.
While I am waiting for the delivery on the Holographic product, I am thinking it is the Archive solution.

As far as the P2, it is memory, based on SD Memory.

Thank you Jan. Looks like Holo Blue Laser still has some time to go before it can be a reality on cameras.

I have another question to ask you. I'm a DIY, hands-on kinda guy & thinking of building my own ring light. I have the materials already. What I plan to do is remove the lens hood & in it's place fit a thin, round plastic board where the lens hood was, bore holes into this plastic to fit tiny LEDs for lights, or low-watt bulbs.

The problem, after thinking about it is how am I gonna do whitebalancing? Since the board is opague & I know that there is a whitebalance sensor somewhere on the camera, which must not be obstructed by any object to perform white balancing properly. Now I'm wondering if putting a ring light where the lens hood was will obstruct the white balance sensor at all. Thanks for your comments.

Hey, I'll post photos of my ringlight material for you all to see & give further suggestions. They're coming soon.

Actually, the round plastic board to hold the ringlight is actually the lid from those Walls Icecream tubs that they sell at supermarkets. Since it's already round, I created a round hole in the middle & it fits snuggly around my DVX lens barrel. But the rectangular DVX lens hood has to be removed. My real concern & issue here is because the plastic board is opaque, it may be blocking the whitebalance sensor. So I will not be able to white balance my DVX with a white card when the ringlight is on :( Sob...sob....

Look at the front of your camera. The WB sensor takes its sample through the lens hood holes. It is covered by plastic. I am sure you will see where it is and just do't let what ever you make get in the way.

Best,

Jan

Hi Jan & all here viewing my thread. As promised, I've included a handful of pictures of my yet-to-be-completed ring light & a mattebox I made earlier on. Comments & suggestions are always welcome :

For the ring light, I'm thinking of drilling 5mm holes around the plastic board so that there will be 5-6 rows of holes & I insert 3watt light bulbs in each of these holes, effectively creating sort of an "area" light with all these small point lights. I know that area lights are the best for removing sharp-edge defined shadows so that my video footage of people look more like portrait & serene. Oh! And I forgot to add that I will spray the front of the plastic board with chrome paint so that it's like a fine reflective silvery surface for the light to bounce off.
