Top 5 movies off the top of my head.

To me, personally influential...

Koyaanisquaatsi (sp?)

What the Bleep do We Know (not as a film perse, but most of the points it makes are relevant to film theory)

Wild Strawberries

Hey Junkie, just got back from camping with my wife, took the inlaws RV and had DVD capability at night. So last week I queued up One False Move on your suggestion and ended up watching it last night. Thank you my brother. If you only knew what a rare gem for a guy like me that is. Sucked me in, kept me there, then paid off in the end. I owe you one.

I just want to put in a plug for Amelie, which only made one of the Top 5 lists thus far.

I think that Amelie is perhaps close to one of the finest all around films ever made in terms of story, cinematography, and sound. It is wonderful.

But, maybe I am just stating the obvious.

Yes. I think that Jeunet is rather brilliant although I admit that I am not a huge fan of City of Lost Children and I never saw his film in the Alien series. But, I thought that A Very Long Engagement was also quite good. I am a sucker for Audrey Tautou. So much so that I couldn't bring myself to see her opposite of a creepy-haired Tom Hanks. I mean, what happened to the hair? This is Tom Hanks, a genius, a man who went from Bosom Buddies to two Oscars. But, that hair.

Don't get me started with bad movie hair. I've never been able to make it through The Jackyl because of the myraid of Toups that Bruce was sporting. And Nicolas Cage's hair? If they only knew how distracting it was.

Luke,

Glad to see that someone else gets distracted by serious hair issues. Thought that I was just a bit nuts considering I would be distracted by my own hideous coiffure on camera.

By the way, nice call on "River Runs Through It." That is a fine film and a great novella. It is one of those amazing films that does not follow the book word for word, but instead uses the benefits of film to mold the story and creates a beautiful work of art. As shot, the film wouldn't have made for a great book and as written the book wouldn't had made a great film. But, independently, they are both fantastic. It is really a case where you cannot say that the book or the film were better because they were different.

Kevin.

And my favorite example of great narration. "Eventually all things merge into one....and a river run's thru it."

I would offer for your consideration the second half of Full Metal Jacket which I personqally find to be as equally compelling a journey of dehuminization as that of Pvt Pyle's.

Right, like the first part of the movie is kind of great and then it's a sound stage that they say is Vietnam, and it totally loses steam.

I still like the movie though.

It's not fair comparing the two halfs of the movie. I still liked parts of the second half. Like when Joker stood up to the bully, that was cool. And when the Vietnamese kid stole his camera and Joker did the Karate kick. Plus I liked the Me so Honee bit. Oh, and I liked how the sniper was picking them off. Made know what to do if a war ever breaks out.

If the first part of full metal jacket wouldn't be so incredible, nobody would have said anything about the 2nd half :)

My top 5:

01 - Apocalypse Now
02 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
03 - Muldolland Drive
04 - The Shining
05 - Videodrome

In no particular order:

The Royal Tenenbaums
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Rushmore
Inherit the Wind
Thank you for Smoking
Its a Wonderful Life
Any Tim Burton movie except Pee-Wee or Batman.
