I was outside messing with one my lens adapters, playing around with some stuff and the house right over from me ( next door the my next door neighbor) were having landscaping done as well as some trees removed. They pulled the truck up to throw the cut logs and branches etc. into it. From what I understand one of the bigger branches got stuck so one of the guys was kicking it trying to force it into the chipper. Finally it broke free as he kicked it and he got sucked into the machine. ( i heard all this screaming and yelling but just thought someone was fooling around, but still it seemed wierd ) Everyone was freaking out. They, instead of trying to hit a stop button tried pulling him back out but the truck was too powerful and .... well lets just say he didnt' make it. They were supposed to have a saftey bar on there but didn't; they were saying that they would of had that on, he would have lived.

Its horrible and scary that this was happening less that 50 yards from where I was standing. I definitely feel for the family and those guys there were right next to him when it was going down.

I dont think so... The owner of the house, who is older, is totally distraught, but don't think any kids were around. Reguardless of age, I dont think anyone could have taken that sight.... I couldn't really and I only heard the screams....

That's absoultely awful, I hope the company helps keep his family afloat.

That's too tragic for words man. Makes me think about all the times I get aggravated about little things...

His poor family.

Speaking from experience, those things are scary and demand respect. I came close to "messing up" a few times with one and from then on, I made sure to do things slowly with all safety precautions in place.

It is a painful and tragic way to go...

It really sucks that people can't react properly without thought in tough situations.

For anybody reading this... chippers have a bar (not a safety bar but a REVERSING BAR) that runs over and around the entire feed shoot... so that it can be pushed back from any side... you push that FORWARD and it will reverse the feed.

Don't bother trying to shut off the machine because the flywheel in a chipper has enough momentum to run for 5 minutes after the machine is no longer running.

Two things I honestly can't believe is that nobody there knew this... and that somebody would be foolish enough to try and force a branch in with ANY body part! You can use a branch to push another branch and if that doesn't work you shut it down... man that is the biggest bummer, but I just feel sick that the whole tragedy could have been avoided with just the tiniest bit of knowledge.

I agree.

All too true.

Product knowledge and safety only get serious regard after a tradgedy but all too often get dismissed beforehand.

Tools can be dangerous. One of my uncles has owned a portable saw mill for many years. One day working on it, the saw got stuck and he went to free it up without shutting it down. He ended up loosing a finger over it, but the moral is Always Turn Off The Tool Before You Screw With It.

Seriously though, that's horrific. I've been fortunate enough never to witness someone die in person.

*knocks on wood*

My grandpa lost two fingers to a saw. And I have worked with chippers before. Those things suck you in- if you get hooked by a branch, you better get unhooked fast.

It's gruesome, but stuff like this happens pretty often. I have friends who are paramedics and they see the aftermath of incidents like this all the time. My heart goes out to the people who witnessed and to the guys family.

That's the most horrible thing I've heard all year :(

I work at a hospital part time and we see horrible stuff all the time but someone dying from a machine like that is near the top of the list.

They really do too. If you ever feel like speeding just spend some time talking to paramedics! Nothing kills the desire faster than that I can tell you!
