The BEST dialogue microphone

oh my god dude, tell me you didnt really ask that.

mess around with the search function and research this and you'll see there is no answer.

cheers

Timapter is right, but in the spirit of trying to provide some useful info, here's a small list of nice mics that might be good in certain situations:

Schoeps MK41
Schoeps CMIT
Sennheiser MKH series (50/60/70/416)

I'll let you do a bit of research on those. Maybe you can come back and ask more focused questions about them afterwards. Also, if you want more detail, it might help to provide us with your price range and your recording environements.

The above list assumes your are comfortable spending more than $1000 per mic.

Sorry, didnt mean to be dismissive, but do some research and you'll that its sort of a silly question.

If you want lower priced but still good mics, you are looking at Audio Technica AT4073a, Rode NTG2, Oktava MK012. These have different applications, so research that too.

Polar Pattern
Frequency Response
S/N

If you dont know what these terms mean, learning that through a google or wikipedia search will give you some very useful sound knowledge that you need.

I hope that was a bit more helpful.
Cheers,
Tim

I like the cyboractor z289. The best part is that it gets the right line reading even if the actor flubs a line. It's pricey but you can save money buy hiring actors that aren't any good.

I know you weren't trying to be dismissive Tim. Not that you implied that I thought you thought... you know what I mean. It seems like its a curse of internet forums to have the same questions come up over and over.

Well, if we are listing professional shotguns then don't forget Neumann (which I dislike but others love) and Sankan cs-3e.

But ultimately the best dialog mic is the one that works for the situation; sometimes short shotgun, sometimes long, sometimes hyper, sometimes PZM or lav. All depends on the location, blocking, and shot.

Cheers

To paraphrase Wabbit a bit -

The best dialogue microphone is the one you can get closest to the mouth of the actor without being in the shot.

I'm not going to list any microphones here - this is covered in the stickies at the top of the forum and in hundreds of posts. And there is another variable (also covered in many posts here) that needs to be addressed - the skill of the boom op. A crap mic in the hands of a great boom op will sound infinitely better than a great mic in the hands of a crap boom op.

yup. a curse indeed. but its nice to know that us regulars here always have each other to bounce new idea's, or purchase decisions, or jobs, off of. Cheers, guys. You make my job that much easier, and that much more fun to talk about. :)

best dialog mic...

you have to break it down into interior or exterior...

exterior

best - schoeps cmit 5u - sanken cs-3e (not familar with the neuman line)
really good - sennheiser 416
entry level - good start - sennheiser me 66 or audio technica #?

interior

best - schoeps cmc6 with mk41 capsule
really good - oktava mk-012 (be careful there are knock off copycats) sound-room.com is a good reliable source
entry level - ? oktava is pretty good for anything under $250

other mics for dialog...
lavalier - sanken cos-11, countrymen b6
boundary/plant mic (good to hide on set or for car interiors) - sanken cub-01

Now Phil, you really need to try the cyboractor z289. V2.063 will also do ADR while the shooting is still going on.
Sorry, it's been a long day.

What they said. There is no universal "best".

Scott,

I tried the cyboractor, but it didn't work well with my workflow because it was supposed to break each word out into a separate track. It only seemed to break every third word into a discreet track. Very poor performance. Though I do have to admit, the kill reverb switch seems to work really well. I used it in Hangar One over at Moffett before they shut it down and I had absolutely no echo. That's impressive.

OLEG!!! I was beginning to get worried. Haven't seen you posting at RAMPS in awhile either. Hope you and yours continue to be safe.

Fired your boomman? What did he do, whack the talent on the head with the boom? :)

Cheers

And by the way, the cyboractor is being recalled soon. Something about releasing the equivaliant radiation of 3 x-rays to anyone within 6 feet of it. Get em while you still can...and buy some lead underwear!

no , he was an asshole ( i didnt hire him , so actually not fired him directly)
the guy was lazy , couldnt hold the boom for 2 minute shotes , didnt understand what is the camera doing , asked me to show him every shot , didnt help much on camera setups move , was stupid as my shoe .
couldnt get what direction he have to stand not to drop shadows
the last thing he did on the set was to to drop one of my microphones.
in that point someone did hold me not to stick one of my booms into his ass .
the line producer replaced him for a 3 days and the sound of my mics definitely have improved :-)

Oleg, You need the Cyberboom mic (also recalled for safety issues) Holds it's self and always gets close. It's covered in the same stuff that James Bond car was so it can be in the shot and not be seen. And it has the "Bad Boom" switch incase you need to get that "low budget" sound.
