shot 24fps, FCP turns it into 60fps - why?

I shot on the PanasonicHVX200, on a P2 card, 24fps. I downloaded this to my computer's hard drive. When I import the files FCP they come in at 59.94fps...?
My capture and sequence settings are both for DVCPRO HD 720p24.
Therefore, when I drop my footage in the timeline it wants to render.
Why is this happening and how to solve this. I noticed that the preset for DVCPRO HD 720p24 uses a compressor called DVCPRO HD 720p60....

Should I give in to FCP and just edit at 60fps? Or use a different compressor so my footage will stay at 24fps? Or is it not even that relevant because even if I edit at 60fps we can just go back to 24fps in the online edit? Or will this create all sorts of new undesirable issues?

You should have recorded using 72024pN if you wanted a 24p timeline. When you record using 720p24, it's recorded in a 60p stream. This is how the Varicam works. I have no need to use this mode and I'm unsure how to remove those redundant frames.

You can just do a CMD-I when playing the quicktime movie to see the framerate too. If he shot it using 720p24 it will indicate 60fps but the playback fps will be different.

shot at 24

shot at 24

yes we did shoot at 24fps and NOT 24pn - as FCP does not support the latter.
so you're basically saying that it means I actually shot at 60fps even though the camera says 24fps, right?

I am unable to open the original XML files in either Quicktime or Cinematools....?

Yes you can edit 24pN in FCP. In fact you can edit it any framerate you want as long as the source material matches. XML files cannot be opened by Quicktime or Cinematools. Only after it's converted to Quicktime files.

still struggling

(When you shoot on 24pN - you can only capture and not ingest into FCP 5.04. For some reason, I decided I wanted to ingest and opted for 24p. Not having realised that it ingests at 60fps.)

So I adjusted the timeline to 60fps. This enables me to drop the clips into the timeline without rendering. BUT - the footage does not play smooth. There are these weird little 'bumps'. I think this is a frame rate issue. When I drop the same clip into a 24fps timeline and render it - it plays smooth!

I am now considering editing in 60fps, and when done, copying this edit into a 24fps timeline and then rendering the whole thing. Does that sound like a viable option?
