James Newton Howard or John Williams?

Ok as if anyone of you may know that M. Night Shyamalan has been asked to do the harry potter movies so if he does take it which looks like he is going for it then he would do 6 and 7. But the score? Would he ask James Newton Howard or stick with the original harry potter music by john williams? You can't take away John Williams's work. He is such a great composer.

It doesn't make it so in itself. But, as I've argued time and again in favor of Spielberg, artistic brilliance and financial uber-success are not mutually exclusive.

What makes him the best is that he is John Williams.

Some say Irving Berlin is the greatest composer of the 20th century, others say Gershwin. In my book it's Johnny Williams. Hell, I'll go out on a limb and say that one would have to go back to the time of the masters (more specifically to a certain pair of cats named Ludwig and Wolfgang) in order to find any real competition to the Williams body of work.

if he were alive today, i wonder if beethoven would have co-produced a track with P Diddy mumbling over moonlight sonata; ala jimmy page and kashmir?

yeah, i'm comparing zeppelin to beethoven.

Topic?

Shyamalan won't be directing this. So there really is no topic.

This is blasphemy I tell you. :Drogar-Sick(DBG):

havent you posted this claim elsewhere? doesn't shyamalan's public statements to the contrary and his current coziness with warner bros and warner bros desire to beef up the marketability of the shyamalan brand name worry you in the slightest? :)

Yes, I have and no it doesn't.

I don't care what he says, there is NO WAY he will direct this.

But hey, I've been wrong before. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Give him a call and ask him, Cygnet.

you know, i talked to someone who shall remain nameless over at blinding edge pictures a few days ago. they thanked me for putting together a "making of" that accurately reflected the spirited atmosphere on set. also said they are a little depressed by the commercial and critical response right now, regrouping, but that night already has an idea for the next one.

i think warner bros would love to attach night to a harry potter movie. if they'll give one to the director of donnie brasco and mona lisa smile, and another to the director of y tu mam tambien, i dont think manoj is such a stretch.

something i learned about james newton howard... when working with m. night, he composes all the themes prior to shooting so night can have all that music floating around in his head while he's in production to help him find the right tone.

That's a really cool fun fact! I should do that next time. I am sure it really helps him.

I'd love to find a way to slip James Horner into the mix...oops, I guess I just did

I've never heard that done before. What if Howard got the vibe wrong ?. I have heard of directors picking and choosing music while writing the script, or storyboards, and some even playing it on set. Wong kar Wai did this for "In the Mood For Love", since he sees the camera op as almost a balletic interplay with the actors, and also uses specific pieces for pace on dollies etc... Well, whateva' works, I guess.

RED # wish I was higher

PS - Didn't care to much for the King Kong soundtrack. I would've liked to hear the other version, although I prefer the less traditional soundtracks.

well, theuy way it was described to me was that there is a lot of shipping cd's back and forth, or maybe just forth, until night is happy with it. but they dont actually go in and record it with a 64 piece orchestra until picture is locked.
