the last king of scotland

Holy Cow.

That looks fantastic.

I've always liked Forrest Whitaker. Nice to see him get top billing in a great role like this.

Wow! This looks great. Not at all what I was expecting from the title...

I dunno.

looks promising...

but

I don't know if I can see Whitaker as an African; I associate him too much with his American characters (in the same sense that I couldn't buy Brad Pitt as a mick in The Devil's Own...or as an Austrian in Seven Years in Tibet for that matter.)

I saw it on the marquee the other day, I need to go see it before they take it out...seems like the better movies (more indy's) disappear quickly from the theaters around here.

Pretty amazing performance by Whitaker, but ultimately this film lacks the emotional gravitas of something like Hotel Rwanda, because we see most of the genocide through secondary sources rather than through the eyes of the victims. Still a brutal, brutal portrayal of one of the 20th century's most dangerous men.

I finally got around to seeing this and I was a bit disappointed. I really wanted to like it but found myself bored with it. I thought Whitaker did a good job, but personally, I preferred Dicaprio's performance in Blood Diamond.

Are you serious? dicaprio was good with his south african accent but the great performance went to whitaker all the way, what a great performance.

Each to his own. I don't even think Whitaker should have been up for Best Actor. His character was really a supporting character in this story. He should have been up for Best Supporting Actor. And James McAvoy just wasn't getting it done. I had a hard time believing his performance.

I am so happy that people aren't digging this film. After watching it, I was dreading posting my review here because I thought everyone would cry blasphemy when I defamed the great Forest Whitaker and his oscar-winning performance. I found the whole thing boring and uneventful. The whole time I'm thinking, "Is this one of those movies where people claim they love it because they think they're supposed to love it because it's "important""?

See the problem with these biopics is that someone's life shouldn't be turned into 2 hours of entertainment. It just doesn't work. Even if you're only taking a slice of their lives. However, producers asked themselves: How do you get movies financed? And the answer is an easy one: You get big name talent attached. However, what's the only way to get big name talent attached? You have to pay a lot of money. So now these same directors are back to square 1. How do you get your movie made if you don't have big money to pay the big actors? Ohhhhh, wait. We give them an acting "challenge". Something that they believe will help them be taken seriously. And what is the number one genre that allows actors to be taken seriously? You got it folks. The "biopic". So now producers have found a way to make their movie, with a big star, and not have to pay them a ton of money. As a result, we get movies like "The Aviator", "Ray" and "Walk The Line". Guaranteed oscar nominations, but movies that struggle to find their pacing and story arc.

Anyway, back to this film. I guess it was about a guy going crazy and the man that experienced it firsthand. I just wasn't compelled to give a sh*t. This was disappointing and I'm sad for whoever felt like they had to say they liked it.

Disagree about the biopic. We've always had 'em, always will. They are different from traditional narrative 3 act films, but that doesn't make them worse ... only different. And the movies you mention as examples found box office ... all over $80M domestic.

My beef with Whitaker winning best actor is that he was a supporting character, but this kind of nomination has happened before - Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York anyone?
