NTG2 Range of Use

I read that the NTG2 is a good shotgun mic, but I also plan on doing some studio-like recording. I will be recording a singer and her instruments, and putting it all together in Acid. The song recording will have no video.

Will the NTG2 go good as a recording microphone, indoors?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Do a search, the answer to 'Shotgun Indoors' has been answered hundreds of times.

you're not looking for a shotgun for that sort of work. but jeremy is right, there are some KILLER threads on this in here if you do a search for them... good luck

Is Oktava good for film making (in/outdoors), and good for studio recording?

Yes it is very good indoors. It is supposedly pretty good outside if its very close and you get the BBG.

The Oktava has also said to do very good picking up instruments. I'm not sure but I think thats what it was made to do?

Hmph. Im split between so many. Brandon Rice says the SGM-2x works good indoors and out, but others seem to contradict.

Brandon is wrong, and in this case, wrong in many many regards.

First: The SGM-2x is an Azden, and they are garbage mics.
Second: You do not want to use a shotgun indoors.
Third: You still have not searched, read the archives, or read the locked posts at the top. The answer to your question has been answered time and time again.

I know that your 14 and that money doesn't grow on trees, but the only thing worse than bad sound, is trying to force bad sound to work well.

The best way to describe it:

You can hump a a goat, and yeah, you'll get a result... but it's not the result you want.

EDIT:

You know what? I'm going to make this lazy proof for you... Read these threads from top to bottom and then come back and ask any questions after you have digested this information for at least 24 hours:

Olright, Im taking my time to read them. Though I have to say, this thread started out asking if the NTG2 was ok for recording voice for songs.

And I answered that right away with a simple, NO.

OK. No need to rip my face off for saying I was told the NTG2 was good. I know what mics are good and not good, and I understand all the audio-babble talk. I know which one I want. I just get the feeling that mics can be said to be bad because of one reviewee's bad experience with it.

And age, by the way, need not be mentioned. Ive gotten over that- all I need is a greencard. But the illegal mexicans are all in the same line as I am, and apparently the US govenrment thinks the illegal folk are more important than us who have TD Visas.

And the lawyer slacks more than jeans.

I have had great success using the SGM-2x. Yeah, it's cheap, but our films have ALWAYS been complimented on how clean the audio sounds (minus the fact I don't know how to mix it very well)...

Wow. I didnt even understand that. I'm sure I understand this thread either. If you know which mic you want, then why ask the question? and if you ask the question why question the answer?

You want the Oktava, preferably with a selection of caps (cardioid and omni for interior music recording, and hypercardioid for film making), and definately with some wind protection if you plan on using it outside for film work (Rycote BBG).

I guess the NTG2 could work for music vocals if you are careful how you record, but as Jeremy says, that goat will probably not bring you good results. :)

Oh got overposted. Brandon, well done on getting good results with an Azden, you must be taking great care in your recordings to get good results... in the real world (meaning any environment you dont have complete control over), better mic's mean good results in environments that an Azden would die in.

So yeah, to each his own.

I have run A/B tests with nearly every single <$500 mic, and posted several of them...

The Azden always rates at the bottom of the barrel, even in studio conditions. Brandon, if you got good results from it, great... But imagine how it would be with better gear.

In the <$500 category there are a lot of options but in my tests I have always found that Azden mic to have a very sloppy pattern, hollow thin sounding, and lacking midtone characteristics.

Right, I'm not saying its better than such and such mic. I am simply saying we've achived wonderful results... Looking into getting a new mic. soon... Upgrade time :)
