M-JPEG shenanigans and misinformation

Hi all.

I like Vegas, but I was disappointed recently when I tried to use it to chop down some footage from a Canon digital still camera. In Vegas, the footage shows as audio only. And yet if you right-click on it in the Vegas browser and choose to play it in the player app (Windows Media Player), it plays fine.

And for yet another strange symptom, if you double-click on it in Explorer to play it in Media Player, it plays a strange low-res preview version.

The Vegas Web site's FAQ addresses this issue, claiming that you're missing the M-JPEG codec and trying to get you to buy a third-party one, which is advertised on Sony's site. But if the codec were missing from your system, the clip wouldn't ever play in Media Player.

I reported as much to Sony, but received several unhelpful replies. Does anybody have a real explanation here?

Thanks!

Other people have reported this, and I'm not sure how you fix it, but I can edit MJPEG on the timeline no problem, so it definitely works once it's set up right. Try re-installing the codec.

Thanks for the reply.

There does seem to be something amiss with the way Vegas uses codecs. M-JPEG files from a Digisuite, for example, play fine to a connected broadcast monitor using lowly Windows Media Player, but not Vegas. That functionality comes with the codec; thus it works even with the free, included Windows player. But not in Vegas?

I had the same issues with footage from my Canon still camera and Vegas. My initial plan was to use quicktime pro to transform the footage into something useful, but then I got distracted by QTPro issues. A codec sounds like an easy fix though.
