Cartoni Focus Setup Advice Needed

Hello,

I just purchased the Focus 102 (f100 head) from B&H after reading all of the positive reviews from this forum. Needless to say, I'm excited to get out there with my hvx!

However, I have a couple of questions that I was hoping someone would kindly take the time to answer:

1) I can't seem to get the tripod plate to lock in place. I snap it onto the top of the head but it still slides front to back and I can't figure out how to lock it in place. I close the 'slide lock lever' but that doesn't do anything. Any thoughts?

2) Also, I was hoping that someone could provide some general 'theory' on how to appropriately set up a tripod. Why are there 2 fluid drag selectors? One on the side of the head and one by the bowl. How is the camera supposed to sit on the head? If I tilt forward is it supposed to spring back up to the level position? Or should it (without the tilt locked) stay in the position that I tilt it to? etc.

Thanks for your time!
Chuck

Didn't your Focus come with a manual? If not, download it here:

http://www.cartoni.com/eng/download.html

The manual will explain everything including what the different knobs are for and how to balance the camera on the head. Check it out and if you still have questions come back and we can help you.

Remember, when you put the plate onto the head, you have to push down on it which triggers the locking latch. This holds the plate but still lets it slide. Then you have close the locking latch all the way to lock everything down.

Thanks for your response.

Yes I do have the manual. But 'locking' the slide lock lever doesn't stop the plate from sliding back and forth.

I assume by 'lock the slide lock lever' they mean push it (part 11 in diagram) all the way in until the slide lock lever release (part 13 in diagram) snaps it into place.

Doing this doesn't change anything on my tripod. Is there a screw I should tighten?

Thanks again!

I don't own a Focus but I've used it a few times so I'm not sure what is going on with yours. There isn't any screw that you should tighten other than the one to the camera. You just push Lever 11 all the way in until Release Button 13 snaps close, which is what you said you are doing. Maybe you don't have the plate aligned properly with the siderails on the head. If you can post some pictures of what's going on maybe I can help you some more.
